Package: mwavem
Version: 2.0-3
Severity: serious

Package mwavem does not install under Lenny. The installation script fails,
and dpkg backs out the installation (but does not purge configuration files).
Part of the problem is that the install script still assumes the use of
modutils instead of module-init-tools, but there may be other issues as well.
Installation was attempted on an IBM ThinkPad 600.

Yes, I do. I normally use an Ethernet credit card adapter for
internet access now; but when I'm on the road, high speed internet is not
always available; and I need the modem for backup. And yes, I still use my
IBM ThinkPad 600.

By the way, your web site (http://panopticon.csustan.edu/thood/tp600lnx.htm)
has been a source of much valuable information to me over the years, and
I'm glad for this opportunity to say "Thank you" personally. If you have
another site that you recommend, please let me know.

Well, I don't understand this; but I tried it again last night, and
it worked. There must have been some kind of environmental difference
between the first attempt and the second attempt (whether or not the
mwave kernel module was loaded, or whatever, who knows).

Here is what I got the first time:

--------------------

Selecting previously deselected package mwavem.
(Reading database ... 26960 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking mwavem (from .../archives/mwavem_2.0-3_i386.deb) ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Setting up mwavem (2.0-3) ...
MAKEDEV created device node /dev/or .

************************************************************************
*
* The update-modules command is deprecated and should not be used!
*
************************************************************************

Starting Mwave modem support: (aborted early) ^[[31mfailed!^{[39;49m
invoke-rc.d: initscript mwavem, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing mwavem (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 mwavem

--------------------

But when I tried it last night, it installed OK. I did find a bona-fide
bug in the /etc/init.d/mwavem script, however. There are a couple of places
where "log_progress_msg" is misspelled as "log_progess_msg". That should
be fixed.

Also, I have a suggestion for improvement:

When you create /etc/modprobe.d/mwave, in which the options to be passed
to the mwave kernel module when it loads are listed, you should add this
line also:

alias pnp:dIBM3760 mwave

This allows the hot-plug system to load the mwave driver automatically
during boot if it detects the presence of the Mwave chip. This avoids
having to list the driver in /etc/modules.

Many of the sound card drivers have "internal aliases" assigned to them
that allow them to be loaded in support of the chips they support.
Try "modinfo snd-cs4236" for example. In fact, I had to blacklist one of
them, snd-cs4232, to keep it from loading instead of snd-cs4236. But the
mwave driver does not have any such internal aliases; so we need to help
it out by defining the external alias above.

You can use "lspnp" to determine the alias name to use. On the ThinkPad
600, "IBM3760" was the only one whose description contained the word
"Mwave"; so I knew it was the right one. I have added this alias to
another file in /etc/modprobe.d on my system (/etc/modprobe.d/local),
and it works great. mwave now loads automatically, and I don't have to
list it in /etc/modules.

I'll be glad to test it for you, but I need more details on the
exact procedure. I've never used svn before, whatever it is. Would
you be so kind as to enlighten me and give me more detailed instructions?

Thanks for the instructions on how to use svn-buildpackage.
I have installed the updated package, and it resolves the modutils
issue and the "progess" issue. It also includes the alias which
allows the kernel mwave module to be automatically loaded by the
hot plug system. In the process of my testing, I believe I have
discovered the "environmental difference" that I referred to earlier.

I am using a stock Debian Lenny kernel, version 2.6.26-1-686.
If I boot this kernel with the kernel boot parameter "acpi=off",
then the mwavem user-space daemon runs fine. But if I use the
kernel boot parameter "acpi=noirq", or if I do not use any
ACPI-related boot parameter, then the user-space daemon fails to
load. The message on the console is

Starting Mwave modem support: (aborted early) failed!

By using

less /var/log/syslog

I can see slightly more detailed messages. They are as follows:

mwavemd: Started the Mwave manager ...
mwavemd: Initializing mwave manager...
mwavemd: MwaveAPIInit StartMwaveSubsystem failed
mwavemd:
mwavemd: ERROR initializing mwave manager...
mwavemd:
mwavemd: Cleaning up, unlinking /dev/Mwave-modem and exiting.

It sure would be nice if the mwavem user-space daemon would peacefully
coexist with ACPI. I'd hate to have to choose between the two. ACPI
gives me a lot of other features that it would be nice to have.

IIRC:
* The mwavem program employs the SMAPI interface.
* The SMAPI interface and the ACPI interface are mutually incompatible
on the ThinkPad 600. If one of the two firmware subsystems is activated
then the other is deactivated.
* ACPI wasn't well developed at the time the ThinkPad 600 was made, so I
would be uncertain as to the quality of the ACPI firmware. ACPI wasn't
tested much since Linux didn't support ACPI well until years later;
everyone used APM.

OK, well then acpi=off will have to remain in effect. I need the modem,
no question about that. But I can't seem to get any APM functionality out
of this kernel. The stock kernel config file seems to indicate that APM is
present, and the kernel accepts the boot parameter "apm=on", but I don't
seem to be able to get it to do anything -- not even power the machine off
with "shutdown -h now". Short of compiling a custom kernel, which I really
don't have the disk space for, do you have any suggestions? It seems to me
that the old sarge 2.6.8 kernel that I custom built would do this.

I realize that technically this is beyond the scope of this bug report,
but the requirement to get the internal modem working, which is after all
the whole purpose of this package, forces acpi=off. And that in turn
raises the issue of how to get apm to work. A laptop with no power management
is not a good thing.

Again, I am using the stock Debian Lenny kernel, 2.6.26-1-686.

Oh, man! Do I ever feel stupid! I can't believe I didn't notice that!

CONFIG_ACPI=y
.
.
.
CONFIG_APM=m

ACPI is compiled into the kernel, but APM is modularized! Of course!
Why I didn't notice the difference between the y and the m I don't know.
What a newbie mistake! The Lord has his ways of keeping me humble,
doesn't he?

I loaded the apm module and that solved the problem. Thanks.

You may close this bug report at your convenience. Thanks for all
your help. Unfortunately, it's too late for these changes to make Lenny.
But the problems in the production version can be fixed by the user,
with proper instructions. Once I get everything running to my satisfaction,
I'm going to try to make a web page on the ThinkPad site, as you
suggested earlier. Thanks again!

Hi,

I have made further changes to the mwavem package. I can't test
the package myself; I need a ThinkPad 600 owner to test it for me.
So can you please use svn-buildpackage to build this version and
install and test the resulting binary package?

To get the latest version, cd to your working copy and run "svn up".
Then run svn-buildpackage again following the previous instructions.

Please let me know the results. If positive, I will release it.

I will try to work that in this weekend.
Sorry for the delay.
Last weekend I was preoccupied with removing a 60-foot tree from the

It blew over during a recent windstorm, doing about $7000 worth of damage.

Here's what I got on the console:

----------

(Reading database ... 93228 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing mwavem ...
Stopping Mwave modem support: mwavemd.
Purging configuration files for mwavem ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...

----------

And here's what I got in /var/log/syslog:

----------

mwavemd: Cleaning up, unlinking /dev/Mwave-modem and exiting.

----------

It looks like everything works perfectly. After installing the package
again, I am currently connected to the Internet via a PPP connection
using this modem as I compose and send this e-mail. After all, that is
the most important test: "Does the modem work?" And it does.
Thanks for all your efforts.
