[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
I've seen the same problem too. Looks like the list of supported OS needs to
be updated in 2 files so that it supports Lenny (Debian 5.0):

/usr/lib/Bastille/API.pm
/usr/lib/Bastille/IOLoader.pm

I also tried the version from Experimental and it has the same problem.

Bastille starts, because I've had it configured and running for a few years.
Now I need to reconfigure bastille and InteractiveBastille fails on the
Debian Version number in /etc/debian_version .

It has been hardened by hand as good as I am able. I have tried passing --os

Not sure that this is the right place to note this.
The fact that bastille is broken is not being reproted by apt-listbugs. I had
installed bastille discovered the problem, checked and discovered that I had
not installed apt-listbugs on this box yet, installed apt-listbugs,
uninstalled bastille, later reinstall bastille = no bug report on bastille.

For what it is worth.

The program says the version number of the operating system isn't able to
be worked on. I suppose the program just needs to accept the new
versioning string.

I have the same problem. This package does not appear to have been
updated for Debian Lenny.

I think it is more than that. Debian Lenny is different from Debian
Etch, and bastille probably needs to be changed to accommodate those
changes.

I hate to suggest an operating system besides Debian on a Debian
bug-tracker, but there is an operating system designed for firewalls.

Not that there's any reason Debian wouldn't make an excellent firewall
if properly hardened, but as much as I love apt, OpenBSD has its
charms.

Description:
 bastille - Security hardening tool
Closes: 510884 518251
Changes:
 bastille (1:3.0.9-8) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Upload to unstable, this package has been sitting in experimental
for too long. Time to get wider testing.
   * Fix typo in calls to modprobe (Closes: #518251)
   * Fix Bastille/API.pm:
       - Make the check that determines wether it runs as root or not
         work properly
       - Replace a call to ErrorLog to a call to B_log
   * Update the latest stable version of Debian in Bastille/API.pm
   * Add DB4.1 and DB5.0 as supported Debian versions. This is not
fully true, however, as Bastille has not been fully tested in sid or lenny.
It will help people test it out though (Closes: #510884)
   * Update Bastille/API.pm.sweth to support Debian even if it's not
     currently used:
       - include definitions for testing Debian releases
       - include the list of Debian releases and the file locations
       - adapt chkconfig_off to support Debian
       - modify the code so that it uses statoverride
       - move chkconfig_on from Bastille/API.pm and adapt it to use
         the new functions
