biew was already part of the archive in the past and it was, in fact,
released with etch.

See #460636 for the bug that requested its removal.

That isn't to say that you shouldn't package it; I just think that you
should be aware of it.

Regards,
Faidon

Thanks, I am aware of that.
It happens that I am one of the few biew users, and perceived today,
on upgrade to lenny,
that it is no more part of the distribution.

Michel.

biew has recently changed name to beye, new URL is
http://beye.sourceforge.net

The project looks like maintained and under active development.
Bug #460636 mentioned 3 reasons to remove biew from Debian:

"This package still depends on debmake, hasn't seen an update in a
REALLY REALLY long time and has no relevant number of users. Please kick it
out."

Now it seems that two of these reasons aren't true anymore (there is no
package so it can't depend on debmake, and now there are upstream updates
available) and the last is completely irrelevant (unexisting packages
can't be expected to have relevant number of users.).

I vote for adding it back to the archive, it's a really a nice & useful tool
with unique functionality, AFAIK there's no known alternative to it.

retitle 510408 RFP: biew -- console hex viewer/editor with disassembler
noowner 510408
thanks

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of biew back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 6 months.

If you are still interested in adopting biew, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

retitle 510408 ITP: biew -- console hex viewer/editor with disassembler
 owner 510408 !
 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing <510408@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

biew has been renamed to beye (binary eye) upstream, and I am interested
in packaging it. Should the bug be retitled, should I open a new ITP, or
what?
