Subject: parenthesis in usage message unclear
Date: Fri, 28 Nov 2008 03:18:11 +0800
Package: lynx-cur
Version: 2.8.7dev10-4
Severity: wishlist

At the top of the usage message,

  lynx.cur: Invalid Option: -zzzzz
  USAGE: lynx.cur [options] [file]
  Options are: ...

say what the "(off)" etc. means, e.g.:

-number_links force numbering of links (off)

E.g., say "Default values in (parenthesis)." #apparently not
or "Current values in (parenthesis)." #apparently not
or "You can toggle to the new value in (parenthesis)." #but how? Only
with -nonumbers, not this line.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
man lynx:

The default boolean, number and string option values that are compiled
into Lynx are displayed in the help-message provided by lynx -help.
Some of those may differ according to how Lynx was built; see the help
message itself for these values. The -help option is processed before
any option, including those that control reading from the lynx.cfg
file. Therefore runtime configuration values are not reflected in the
       help-message.

Lynx is showing the compiled-in values because it processes the "-help" option
before any interesting options or configuration settings. It checks first
for this, and a few other options (show_cfg, trace, trace_mask, version),
and handles those first - no matter what the order of the command-line options
happens to be.

If your configuration (lynx.cfg) sets values, those are not reflected in the
help-message.

The other options are processed later (there are actually three stages,
depending on the type of option).

How abominable. Then just don't show any values then. Showing no value is
better than showing a wrong/misleading value.

Or say "compile time default: ..."; "compile time default: ..."
or "compiled default".

As nobody will first read the fine print about that they are not really current...
