Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name    : unetbootin
  Version : 282
Upstream Author : Geza Kovacs <geza0kovacs@gmail.com>
* URL             : http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
* License         : GPL-2+
  Programming Lang: C++/Qt4
  Description : universal netboot installer

UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer) is a cross-platform utility that can
create Live USB systems and can load a variety of system utilities or install
various Linux distributions and other operating systems without a CD.

----

I wanted to package this interesting software by myself, but I found it has
some precompiled binaries (both for Windows and Linux), and after simply
removing them it doesn't compile. It does need at least two or three binaries
-- but I don't know how to circumvent this or how to use existing Debian
packages (if any exist for them): they are syslinux, but also other files
unknown to me, like "memdisk", or "ubn*".

Kindly,
David

OK I've made the necessary changes in revision 283
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~gezakovacs/unetbootin/devel-new/revision/283

Simply check out the source from bazaar, go to src/unetbootin and either
run the "build-nostatic" script or the following commands:

qmake "DEFINES += NOSTATIC" "RESOURCES -= unetbootin.qrc"
make

For reference, the final product should thus look something like this
(sorry, not nicely debianized or anything)
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/unetbootin/unetbootin_283_amd64.deb

Could you please provide a downloadable tarball? Something like
unetbootin-283.tar.gz. I've branched that revision, and working on it, but
others might feel more comfortable if they had a tarball.

I get:

RCC: Error in 'unetbootin.qrc': Cannot find file 'unetbootin_be.qm'
RCC: Error in 'unetbootin.qrc': Cannot find file 'unetbootin_de.qm'
RCC: Error in 'unetbootin.qrc': Cannot find file 'unetbootin_es.qm'

After some compiling, here's what I get (related to the above, I suppose):

/usr/bin/rcc -name unetbootin unetbootin.qrc -o qrc_unetbootin.cpp
RCC: Error in 'unetbootin.qrc': Cannot find file 'unetbootin_be.qm'
make: *** [qrc_unetbootin.cpp] Error 1

Obviously, the "RESOURCES -= unetbootin.qrc" argument to qmake did not work...

Ok, I'll take a look at that.

Thanks,
David

P.S.: it would be *far* simpler if you provided a windows tarball and a linux
one. But that's IMHO, you're upstream and have decisional power :)

Ok, I just had to:

lupdate unetbootin.pro
lrelease unetbootin.pro

before launching qmake.

However, there are still some binaries needed by the compile process (binaries
in the wider sense: not as executables, but as "binary data"): vesamenu.c32 and
memdisk. Geza: is the source for these two available anywhere?

I patched unetbootin.qrc, removing the lines involving those two files, and it
compiled just fine. The binary runs, it displays correctly, but will it work? I
don't have any USB-disk/pendrive handy to test anything.

Kindly,
David

Hi David, Geza told that all needed binaries can used from syslinux and p7zip-full.
I am going to check it soon. Or do you want to package unetbootin by yourself?

If you are going to use some VCS and you agree, I would be glad to co-maintain this package.

I have some material to test, but it will need some time.

OK, I've added a "clean" tarball at
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-source-clean-latest.tar.gz

I've also added some build and packaging instructions at
http://unetbootin.wiki.sourceforge.net/compile

PS: vol_id is also required by the application, so should udev be added
as a dependency? Or would it be possible to split vol_id into a seperate
package, and add that as a dependency?

How about as "Recommends" or "Suggested", since vol_id is only needed
under two circumstances:

1. You're installing Fedora (it's used for getting the UUID of the USB
drive)
2. You have a superfloppy-formatted USB drive (no MBR), in which case if
vol_id isn't present, the drive won't be autodetected, but manually
selecting it via the "show all drives" option will work.

This is far less common than the second situation:

I've seen many of these. Especially if the drive has been formatted in
Microsoft Windows operating systems.

If it were only situation 1., I'd put it as a Recommends... situation 2 is not
that critical either: the drive is just not autodetected. I'd go for a
Recommends, maybe also patching unetbootin (I'll take a look at the code where
the detection happens) warning that "You miss vol_id drom the udev package".
Would that be a feasible option?

Kindly,
David

Actually, Windows formats the drive as it originally was in the factory
setting; it doesn't change it to superfloppy if it originally had an
MBR. From what I've seen, mostly only older, small-capacity drives (128
MB or less) are generally factory-formatted as superfloppy to save
space, I have yet to see a 1 GB drive (the target audience)
factory-formatted as superfloppy.

I already have that warning; more specifically it's "vol_id not found,
please install udev or your distribution's equivalent".

Sorry, I just noticed that I had missed a small bug with using locally
available syslinux files, if you're building the package and have
already made a debianized copy of the please apply this patch
(otherwise if you're using the bzr branch it's fixed as of rev 287)

Oh and David, yes udev as "Recommended" with the extra warning (which is
already there) would be fine, as you mentioned.

Subject: Packaging UNetbootin Translations
Date: Sat, 04 Oct 2008 22:15:34 -0400
As of revision 288, I've added /usr/share/unetbootin to the translations
search path, so please update your local copy, and store the .qm
translation files there in the package. I assume this is the proper,
"debianized" way to store translations; if not, please tell me the
proper path and I can correct it. Currently, the fr, it, pt, zh, ru
translations are complete and up-to-date, the es translation is somewhat
out-of-date but mostly works, the hu translation is incomplete, while
the others haven't been started on.

Geza

Hello Geza, this way is normal, though I would put them in /usr/share/unetbootin/translations.

I'd rather just keep the translations in /usr/share/unetbootin to reduce
excessive path lengths and unnecessary subdirectories. Anyhow, I don't
see any packages on Debian QA or rule files in SVN/CVS anywhere; is
there any progress being made? If you've run into any issues with
debianization or packaging, is there any way I could help out?

David Paleino is main maintainer, he has to publish initial Debian packaging
to collab-maint or drop me from co-maintaining and package unetbootin himself.

David, I'm waiting for your answer.

Hello,
please package that yourself. I don't have a stable Internet connection, and
don't see any free time in the next two months to do that :(

Please, do that package.

Sorry for not writing anymore :(

Kindly,
David

Ok, understood. Then I will proceed with unetbootin in near future.
I have no much time now though, thus delays will be.
