Subject: okular should depend on cups-bsd for printing
Date: Fri, 19 Sep 2008 09:45:51 -0300
Package: okular
Version: 4:4.1.1-1
Severity: normal

Hi, i was trying to print a pdf but nothing was happening,
then pinotree helped me to find that lpr was missing
but after installed lpr package we saw that it wasn't
compatible with okular, so the dependency should be
upon cups-bsd.

here is the debug output of okular to show
that it conflict with lpr package:
okular(4456)/okular (app) Okular::FilePrinter::doPrintFiles: Executing "lpr" with arguments ("-P", "scx4100", "-#1", "-J", "Microsoft Word -
UseTerms_RetailFPP_Vista_HomeBasic_pt-BR", "-o", "media=A4", "-o", "portrait", "-o", "sides=one-sided", "-o", "outputorder=normal", "-o", "Collate=False", "-r",
"/tmp/kde-daniel/okularGz4456.ps")
usage: lpr [-cdfghlmnpqrstv] [-#num] [-1234 font] [-C class] [-i [numcols]]
[-J job] [-Pprinter] [-T title] [-U user] [-wnum] [name ...]

here with cups-bsd:

okular(4963)/okular (app) Okular::FilePrinter::doPrintFiles: Executing "lpr" with arguments ("-P", "scx4100", "-#1", "-J", "Microsoft Word -
UseTerms_RetailFPP_Vista_HomeBasic_pt-BR", "-o", "media=A4", "-o", "portrait", "-o", "sides=one-sided", "-o", "outputorder=normal", "-o", "Collate=False", "-r",
"/tmp/kde-daniel/okularIf4963.ps")

Thanks.

Hi,

This problem is still present in 4.1.3 version of okular.
I lost quite some time finding where the problem was.

Would be nice if okular depends (or at least recommends ?) cups-bsd.

Cheers.

Yes, installing cups-bsd fixed the printing for me.

Anyway, whatever the preferred fix, I think that the severity of this bug
should be grave, because a viewer that cannot print is unusable in my
opinion.

Thank you.

But printing is not the main task of okular. I agree that it is pretty
important.

Subject: Recommending cups-bsd is not a full fix

IMO merely recommending cups-bsd is not a full fix: If one has lpr
installed, cups-bsd won't be installed alongside cups-bsd. As long as
okular _silently_ fails to print in some configurations I would not
consider this bug solved. A simple solution would be to check, if
cupsbsd is available upon printing and inform the user if not.
(Btw. shouldn't lpr from the cupsbsd and the lpr package share a common
interface?)

Best regards

Benjamin

Should be added as dependence for sure.

Please avoid reopening old bugs, it's better to ask in the debian-kde users
list or in the #debian-kde irc channel, if that wouldn't help then open a new
one. The issue that was reported here was fixed: cups-bsd was added as a
recommends.

Also, when you send a message to control your mail is not shown in the bug,
you need to cc the bug for that.

okular uses the lpr from cups, if you have a different lpr it needs to accept
the same parameters. You could try:
apt install cups-bsd lpr- lprng- gnuspool-
