Package: wnpp

Hello

Please someone package the game `Yo Frankie!' (http://www.yofrankie.org,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yo_Frankie!) by the Blender Institute, the
makers of `Elephants Dream' (http://www.elephantsdream.org,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephants_Dream) and `Big Buck Bunny'
(http://www.bigbuckbunny.org, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Buck_Bunny)
and also the folks that brought us Blender (www.blender.org), the versatile
3D modeller/renderer that's already in Debian.

As was the case with their previous projects, their newest creation features
captivating graphics, the kind of graphics that's not often found in Open
Source gaming. What's more, all the data is available under a Creative
Commons license.

Many of the dependencies of yofrankie are already in Debian (Python,
CrystalSpace, Blender, ...). There's a APT repository that's got some newer versions
of the packages already in Debian plus some .deb packages of some other stuff
that might be necessary to run yofrankie:
http://b2cs.delcorp.org/index.php/Debian_Packages.

The Blender Insitute hosts `Yo Frankie!' as a "Zero Install package"
(see http://0install.net).

A post of interest to prospective maintainers might be
http://www.yofrankie.org/?p=185.

Cheers

(The long description is adapted from the Wikipedia article
on `Yo Frankie!'.)

Yo Frankie! is an open source computer game by the Blender Institute.

glider who was the antagonist of the film Big Buck Bunny.
The game has been made using free software, partly as a showcase of
what can be achieved with free software.

Hi,
anyone who is interested in this PR should know that money is being
offered for its completion. I created a cofundos.org project that
describes the details.

You can either also bid money to get this done or offer to take this job
an earn the bounty.

Here is the project page:

Robert

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Hi all,

Extracted some info from my IRC logs about issues with Yo Frankie!:

Aug 27 22:53:26 <Baby>	is anybody thinking about packaging apricot?
Aug 27 22:53:30 <Baby>	http://www.yofrankie.org/?page_id=15
Aug 27 23:00:03 <Rhonda>	Don't forget that you need to replace the Yo Frankie! logo
Aug 27 23:00:24 <Rhonda>	"Excluded from the Creative Commons is: ... Yo Frankie! logo"
Aug 27 23:00:49 <Baby>	yup, we have to rename it too as iceweasel?
Aug 27 23:01:26 <Rhonda>	Doesn't sound like. It says logo, not wording.
Aug 27 23:01:45 <Baby>	cool :)

Jul 27 00:01:19 <DPic>	can somebody get yo frankie packaged?
Jul 27 00:02:23 <pabs>	DPic: looks like someone already is: http://bugs.debian.org/497859
Jul 27 00:03:20 <DPic>	pabs, last post was from may
Jul 27 00:03:37 <pabs>	correct
Jul 27 00:03:46 <pabs>	last time I looked at it, upstream didn't seem very sane
Jul 27 00:04:10 <DPic>	how so?
Jul 27 00:04:58 <pabs>	no releases, just SVN
Jul 27 00:05:20 <pabs>	multiple engines with no clarity about the difference
Jul 27 00:06:35 <DPic>	ah
Jul 27 00:09:02 <pabs>	probably changed since then
Jul 27 00:09:39 <DPic>	it's a great game to show off what can be done with all FLOSS software
Jul 27 00:10:28 <pabs>	DPic: anyways, best send a ping to the bug and Runa to find out what the progress is
Jul 27 00:10:51 <DPic>	Runa?
Jul 27 00:10:58 <pabs>	the person doing the packaging
Jul 27 00:11:14 <pabs>	reading the bug helps :)
Jul 27 00:11:36 *	pabs looking at upstream
Jul 27 00:11:47 <pabs>	120Mb zip file, ouch
Jul 27 00:12:54 <pabs>	I guess the crystal space version is no longer developed, the download for it is from Sept 2008
Jul 27 00:13:57 <DPic>	what was even the difference?
Jul 27 00:14:07 <pabs>	no idea
Jul 27 00:16:02 *	pabs looks at the blender version zip
Jul 27 00:16:30 <pabs>	ahh, looks like this is the binary version
Jul 27 00:17:57 <pabs>	doesn't look like there is any copyright info at all
Jul 27 00:18:07 <pabs>	only two files have a license
Jul 27 00:19:28 *	pabs tries svn
Jul 27 00:20:58 <pabs>	SVN server isn't responding
Jul 27 00:21:35 <pabs>	egads, the zip file includes a whole bunch of windows stuff
Jul 27 00:21:41 <pabs>	precompiled no less
Jul 27 00:21:58 *	pabs feels his eyes bleeding
Jul 27 00:23:06 <pabs>	hmm, .blend files have weird paths embedded in them: /usr/home/intrr/blender/blend/
Jul 27 00:23:11 <pabs>	wtf is /usr/home
Jul 27 00:27:15 <pabs>	some of the windows stuff is GPL and I don't see any source so that is a GPL violation
Jul 27 00:29:53 <pabs>	one of the sounds looks like it came from freesound.org, which is under a decidedly non-free license
Jul 27 00:31:46 <pabs>	make that two sounds
Jul 27 00:32:08 <pabs>	3
Jul 27 00:33:51 <pabs>	I wonder about source code for some of the images
Jul 27 00:34:26 <pabs>	there is a font embedded in one of the images, I wonder which font that is
Jul 27 00:36:52 <pabs>	ah, the ttf in the tarball must be it
Jul 27 00:37:22 <pabs>	would be nice to have the .sfd source for that ttf
Jul 27 00:39:59 <pabs>	so, in short, not yet ready to be packaged for Debian
Jul 27 00:41:24 <stevecotton>	:( thanks for trying
Jul 27 00:41:55 <pabs>	DPic, stevecotton: feel free to post the above to the bug log

I'd say this is a somewhat important game, and is already packaged in
PlayDeb. From what i understand, it needed the new version of Blender, so it
should work fine now.
