Package: libv8
Severity: wishlist

Google V8 is a C++ library for embedding JavaScript support into C++
applications. It's the JavaScript engine for Google's Chrome browser.

SVN repository is at <http://v8.googlecode.com/svn/>. At the time I'm
writing this the latest version seems to be 0.2.

Google V8 is licensed by a BSD license and some third party parts of it
are 2-clause BSD, MIT and 3-clause BSD according to the V8's LICENSE file.

My deb-package for etch is located at
<http://www.jhh.me/pub/packages/debian/etch/libv8/> and it's based on
the SVN trunk version.

I'd like to second this request.

Additionally, the v8 dist contains a sample program demonstrating the
use of the v8 library, 'samples/shell.cc' that provides a minimal
interactive shell and interpreter for .js files; This might be
appropriate to install and add as an alternative for 'js'.

retitle 497701 ITP: libv8 -- Google V8 JavaScript Engine
owner 497701 !
thanks

Taking this, it seems a pretty 'standard' project so it can
be packaged easily.

The package seemed simple but actually there are two issues:
1) the package is using scons without any install target, that
means that it should be patched so an install target will be
added; this is trivial

2) the shared library which is built from the package (libv8.so)
is not shipping *any* soname, and scons does not support
sonames natively; upstream knows about this, see:
http://code.google.com/p/v8/issues/detail?id=151

The Debian Library Packaging Guide advices to inform upstream
about the soname missing and let him add the soname, rather than
introducing a binary compatibility only for debian.

I'm poking upstream, if he does not reply probably it's better
not to package libv8, waiting for the soname; anyway if someone
else has any other idea please feel free to change the ownership
of this ITP.

Cheers
Antonio

According to Antonio Radici:
> The package seemed simple but actually there are two issues:

Just to let you know that I filed bugs upstream for those 2 issues a while ago
when i worked on v8 and chromium for Ubuntu.

The 1st issue is http://code.google.com/p/v8/issues/detail?id=150
I already addressed the 'install' target as a patch.
I don't remember why i didn't push it upstream, I should have.

My packaging branch is available at:
https://code.launchpad.net/~chromium-team/chromium-v8/chromium-v8.head
And the corresponding project page:
https://launchpad.net/chromium-v8

It would be nice to merge our efforts.
Please let me know what you think.

Hi Fabien,
next week I'll package libv8 with a 0d SONAME; I saw
your bug report and I remember posting a comment
in there but I don't know where I cannot see it anymore :|

I'm already using your install patch, unfortunately
scons does not support SONAME's natively; if you have
any workaround please let me know :)

A temporary git repository is here:
http://git.debian.org/?p=users/antonio-guest/libv8.git

I'll move it to collab-maint as soon as I finish the
debian packaging and tag the first release, let me know
if you want to contribute to it :-)

Cheers
Antonio

Antonio,

I just had a look at your branch, it's totally different from mine.
That's too bad, I don't see how we could collaborate here.

It seems to me you are re-doing everything differently.

I don't understand why you didn't start from my branch.
I have everything needed, except the soname, which you don't have
either.

/Fabien

Hi,

Antonio, would you consider to team maintain this with Fabien? Fabien
did quite a lot of work on the whole chromium stack, he just seemed to
be not aware about how take an ITP. Also having the whole chromium
stack maintained by a team seems to make a lot of sense to me.

Thanks for considering this,

 - Alexander

Sure, no problem
I'll adapt the git repository to its work and add him to the maintainers.

Hi Fabien,
I have no problem in copying over your branch, if you're already member
of the collab-maint group on alioth you're welcome to change it accordingly;
if not please request the membership on alioth :-)

I'm adding libv8.git to collab-maint right now, please feel free to include
all your changes and let me know if you find something not compatible, I'd be
more than happy to remove it and include your changes as soon as they are
compliant with Debian Policy 3.8.0.

Feel free to contact me with a private mail if you have any questions.

Cheers
Antonio

Sorry about not responding to this earlier. We'd be happy to accept patches for
adding a SONAME to the generated shared object files to our SCons-based build system.

i had to make sure you noticed :)

Cheers,
Jérémy.

v8 now adds a correct soname to the library (in 1.1 branch and in bleeding edge),
provided scons is called with
soname=on

Hi Fabien,
I still have ITP 497701 for libv8 open and I saw that you and your team made a
great progress incorporating libv8 in Ubuntu, since upstream is now distributing
a SONAME I reckon that the debian packaging would be fairly easy and it would be
just a matter of incorporating your changes (obviousy retaining your
copyright).

Since you did most of the work on Ubuntu, I was wondering if you want to
co-maintain the package in Debian (if you don't have time) or even maintain it
(if you have time), I will take care of doing the first build by adapting your
package for Debian and then it will be just a matter of syncing the two repo.

What do you think?

I look forward to your reply.

Cheers
Antonio

As follow-up to my previous mail:
I've created the libv8 package by slightly modifying Fabien changes to make the
package lintian clean, everything can be seen in the git repo.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/libv8
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
  contrib non-free
- dget http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/libv8/libv8_1.3.9-1.dsc

I've sent a mail to debian-mentors@ to get a sponsor.

Cheers
Antonio

Hi all,
status for everyone who's interested to this package:
the package was uploaded to NEW and rejected because the licenses were
not correctly specified; then after a further inspection of the licenses I've
found that a tool called tools/jsmin.py which is licensed with a non-free
license, see the related thread here:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2009/09/msg00033.html

I'm following this up with upstream and see what we can do.

FWIW, since this is just a javascript minifier, it seems the import of
it could easily be ripped out of js2c.py, and replaced with stub
functions that do no mimimsation.

Hi Joey,
thanks fro your patch, you were very helpful, I applied it and it worked

- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
  main contrib non-free
- dget

Before sponsoring this, a few things:

* The copyright file needs to either include a copy of the MIT license,
or refer to a file in debian that contains it. ftp-masters will
probably say same. (Doesn't matter for JSON license since jsmin is removed).

* In repack.sh the comment before rm jsmin is wrong/boilerplate.

I've fixed both things and reuploaded the package on mentors on the same
URL as before, please let me know if there is anything else.
