The scripts with this command were worked for a years, but now failed
and report:

Shutdown of remote machine failed

result was: WERR_OK

I don't know starting from what version this problem arise, but it is
result of one of upgrades. At the same time the smb client on the same
machine with the same account on the same server is working fine. More
over, the "net rpc user" is working too.

What is the server you're trying to use this command against - a Windows or
a Samba server?

A Windows, of course. This is strange idea to shutdown linux
with smbclient. The same result I've got with few different
machines as clients and servers with w2k and w2003. I am using
this in scripts to shutdown virtual guest machines (kvm) when
it's host going to shutdown as well as real windows machines in
some cases, for example when signal received from UPS.

Hi all,
I have the same problem. I cannot power off Windows XP clients  
anymore. My system is Debian Linux testing/unstable, but it stopped  
working several months before. I am teacher and administrator at high  
school and I am using this feature to power off windows clients in the  
classroom remotely.

and result was:

Hi,

Did the following.

Downloaded samba-3.2.6.tar.gz from samba.org, untared, and just run
"./configure" followed by "make" under the "samba-3.2.6/source" folder;
chdir to "bin", then "export
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/src/samba-3.2.6/source/bin" and "./net rpc
shutdown -r -f -t 0 -d 3 -W DTSI-RSISTEMAS -U Administrator -S
192.168.1.66".

Worked for me (output bellow). I'm running an "up to date" Lenny
installation.

BTW, I guess you already know of these, but anyway (seemed like the same
thing to me):

If you like, I may try the same thing with samba-3.2.5.tar.gz from
samba.org, as bug #5898 from Samba states the issue is dealt with in
3.2.5. (I do not know if the changes that were made from the original
tar.gz are supposed to affect anything in Debian).

Certainly not...:-)

I confirm that the bug is fixed in both 3.2.6 and  3.3.0. That was
indeed upstream's bug #5898, fixed by Gunther Dreschner.

Marking as fixed in these versions (indeed only 3.3.0-rc2 as 3.2.6 is
not (and will not be) in Debian)

succeed.

It's packaged in experimental.

Given that a workaround for this bug is now known, we probably won't
backport the change for the lenny release.
