Subject: xserver-xorg-video-intel: X server crashes with "lockup" on G45 (X4500HD) chipset
Date: Sat, 09 Aug 2008 08:45:44 -0400
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.4.0-1
Severity: important

When using the 2.4.0-1 package from experimental with onboard video on a
G45 motherboard, the X server simply locks up after about 5 seconds.
This happens consistently.

The log reports:

Fatal server error:
lockup

This may or may not be related to earlier warnings:

(WW) intel(0): ESR is 0x00000010, page table error
(WW) intel(0): PGTBL_ER is 0x01100001, host gtt pte, CS instruction GTT PTE, LC pte
(WW) intel(0): PRB0_CTL (0x0001f001) indicates ring buffer enabled
(WW) intel(0): PRB0_HEAD (0x0d00b034) and PRB0_TAIL (0x0000b010) indicate ring buffer not flushed
(WW) intel(0): Existing errors found in hardware state.

I'm running in 32-bit mode (both kernel and userland).

Switching to the vesa driver allows X to work, but, of course,
performance is lacking.

By the way does the version in sid work? (I tried to backport the
necessary patches for non-HDMI output from 2.4, but may have missed some
and have no G4x hardware to test.)

Cheers,
Julien

Ok. I can merge that patch in and build a new package to test.

2.3.2-2+lenny2 did run, but the log showed it as an unknown chipset.
I don't have the log from that version anymore.

Thanks,

Eric

After applying that patch manually, rebuilding and reinstalling the
package, and restarting the X server, I saw no change in behavior. X
locked up again with the same message.

I've tried downgrading back to the version in sid, but I'm no longer
able to get it to work at all with sid's driver. With 2%3a2.3.2-2+lenny2_i386
I've managed to completely lock up the whole machine a few times.
Other times, it just fails to start. See the log following.

I just uploaded 2.4.1 to experimental. Let me know if you have better
luck with that version; if it's still broken, we'll have to report it
upstream.

For lenny, we'll make X choose the vesa driver for the new intel
chipsets, as that's more likely to work than the half-backported support
in -intel 2.3.2.

Cheers,
Julien

Thanks, I'll try it shortly.

The vesa driver has been stable for me, although performance is quite
weak.

I'm not getting a lockup with this version, but I don't have a usable
display either. It's insisting on picking a display resolution
which is incompatible with the display (a 1080p LCD TV).
The TV will just display "Unsupported Video Format" when X starts.

I was sometimes getting this with the old version, too. (Sorry,
I haven't kept precise notes about what settings lead to which
behaviors.)

My old nvidia card had no trouble driving this display at 1920x1080
progressive.

Also, with the other X packages from experimental which are required
to install this one, I sometimes lose keyboard support. (but
LIRC input still works...)

I upgraded to version 2:2.4.2-1 today, and the problem is not yet
resolved.

I cannot get the driver to run at 1080p/i at all. It tries to run at
1920x540 instead, and the display can't handle that. No amount of
manual modeline settings in the config file seem to make any difference.
I can't seem to override the ddc settings.

When running at 720p, the display does operate for about 10 - 15
seconds, then crashes.

Does this still happen with latest intel driver in unstable or
experimental?

I haven't tried in quite some time. After failing to get the intel
driver to work, I installed an nvidia based card and started using
that. It's been my intention to go back and re-test the intel driver,
but I haven't had the time.

I can understand that. I'm closing this bug for now; if you still
experience some issues when you find time to try again, please make
sure you run recent versions of all components (see details in the
second part of [1]), then check open bugreports, and open a new one if
needed.
