I was gonna look at this on Ubuntu's end to see if i can get it fixed
than ask for it to be fixed in Debian. I have a couple of extensions to
get out first, just found problems with one i thought was ready. I will
try to look at it by end of month as it stands. Someone can feel free to
edit the install.rdf to include ff3 as needed and see if it is compliant
with it.

I wonder if any fork from this project is still alive...
there was a fork
Bookmark Sync and Sort
which also got somewhat abandoned and then
PlaceSync appeared (which is a cut version of Sync and Sort)
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8379
also there is
SyncPlaces
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8426

but both are young projects...

the best alternative imho is foxmarks but I am not sure if they finally
implemented non-foxmarks-server approach... actually they do already
http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmarks:_Frequently_Asked_Questions#Using_Other_Servers
(FTP and WebDAV are supported), so I guess properly packaged foxmarks
might be a good replacement for bookmarksftp

actually there is RFP #482938

Ok im working on placesync at this time. IMHO mozilla-bookmarksftp and
just add placesync but im not a debian dev so i cant really do much. I
have debian rules on how to do it (what hoops i have to run through)

What would you like to do drop mozillabook* and add placesync in its place?

the problem that there is no 'newer version' of mozilla-bookmarksftp...

the fact that you are not debian dev means close to nothing ;-) if you
package anything - let me know -- I will inspect it and whenever
everything is good enough to appear in debian -- I would be happy to
sponsor your upload into debian

Thanks for helping me get it in archives. Im waiting on a reply to an
email i sent to upstream authoer about licensing and hopfully a CVS or
SVN. but can use .xpi if needed.
we can fix mozilla-bookmarksftp but since no newer version than IMHO it
should be replaved by Foxmarks. let me know if *-bookmarks should be
kept and i will be glad to try and update the install.rdf and hop it
works but it should.

On the Ubuntu side of extensions we are not packaging non-free
extensions at this time. If you are than i should be able to do it for
you. Please let me know what you want to do, but whatever extension you
want i will work on it, If all info is available than it should only
take a few hours to package test, I still need to use mbox that may be
todays work

I'm elevating the severity of this bug to grave (makes the package in
question unusable or mostly so...) because iceweasel 3 is in both
lenny and sid, so this package really should be removed from lenny if
it's not updated.

Hi,

according to the discussion in #492837, mozilla-bookmarksftp is
completely unusable with the lenny's version of iceweasel and "fixing"
will be finding a new upstream (because it's dead) and uploading that.
That's too invasive at this point of the release cycle, so
mozilla-bookmarksftp should be removed from lenny if not lenny and unstable.

Kind regards

T.

Indeed it is useless in lenny, thus should be removed from release for
the sake of clarity, but I would drag it within sid -- may be some
effort would appear to fix it up to be compatible with firefox 3.0, so
we could patch it within Debian.

Cheers

I have pushed this to my Launchpad PPA, We are at this time unable to
push Debian sources to PPA'a but i added iceweasel and friends to
depends, i may be pushing a version with 3.5 and 3.6 in depends but i
haven't done that yet. Does Debian have package mozilla-devscripts or is
that just us? You can find binaries and source at the following link:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~gnomefreak/+archive/ppa
the only thing i cna think of that would be an issue is the
mozilla-devscripts depend but that is easy enough to change.

Sorry forgot. I am willing to take over maintaining it, since upstream
died. I'm still learning Debian's bug tracker its a bit different than
ours, so if there are other bugs on this let me know maybe i can sneak
them in. I emailed asac already since he left for the day, and let him
know what i was thinking.

have you come up with a patch which makes it work (not only to get
loaded/enabled) for FF3?

No need for a patch its just adjusting one line in the install.rdf
I will upload a diff of the changes, I just have to figure out how to
upload to bug tracker. If i figure it out in a few minutes ill upload it
tonight if not maybe before weekend.

so you just altered allowed version... did you check if that worked...
ie you could sync bookmarks? I think I have tried pure version mangling
some time (it was prior FF 3.0 iirc) and I could start bookmarksftp but
could not sync... so in other words it was useless

I have tested this and it fails to work as expected. This is something i
will not pursue (this one package) I have yet found a free version of
this type of extension. If you are able to find one that is free let me
know and i will look at it.

Hi all

please add a version dependency to this package:
It should depend on firefox | iceweasel version less than 3

FF 3 organizes its bookmarks in a very different manner (sqlite),
so bookmarksftp (I used and liked it) cannot be simply "fixed" to work
with newer firefoxes and iceweasels.

As iceweasel 2.x will very probably not be contained in future
versions of Debian (and is not contained in the currently-stable
etch), I suggest to drop this package. (is this the right place for a
request like this?)

On the upstream page https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14
I found a pointer to
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8426 'SyncPlaces', a
new firefox addon doing a similar job for firefox|iceweasel 3.0 and
3.5.

Just my 2 ¢

Olaf

yeah -- I've looked at syncplaces before (search in this bugreport) --
it might be a viable substitution indeed

version limitation << 3 -- indeed makes sens -- I guess I will close
this bug with that upload

and indeed we should drop bookmarksftp whenever iceweasel >= 3.0 gets
into testing

thanks ;)

Iceweasel current is Version: 3.0.6-1 in stable!
So this package does only make sense in oldstable which has
iceweasel 2.0.x

You filled the bug http://bugs.debian.org/492837 in Debian BTS
against the package bookmarksftp. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/553210. That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
