I found out that the problem is caused by audacious-crossfade. Remove
crossfade, maybe reinstall audacious and then install the newest version
of audacious-crossfade again, e.g. from
http://famous-timo.de/design4/home/pages/software/debian/audacious-crossfade_0.3.14-1_i386.deb
This works.

Hi Tomasz,
Is it possible for you to check out the current upstream version, build
it, and see whether the problem stills occurs? Hopefully we can get this
problem fixed before 2.0 is released. Unfortunately, I don't have an

Tomasz,
Pardon my bad memory, since I think you replied to me off-list already.
Do you still get this crash with 1.5.1-4 or 2.0.1-1? Make sure to clear
$HOME/.config/audacious when you update, since running new versions with
old config files has been known to cause problems.

Took me a while to notice your reply; would be nice if you could add my
email to the "To:" field.
Seriously, 1.5.1 is ancient as far as the amount of code that has been
rewritten. 2.2.0-beta1 has already been released upstream. Can you at
least test with 2.1-1 from Squeeze?
Peace,
John Lindgren

strace is good for tracking disk access, but not so good for a
segmentation fault. Please send a debugger backtrace.

Sorry, but I'm not up on debuggers (for 'audacious' anyway). What
would I type at the command line? A one-liner would be ideal for copy
& pasting.

I wasn't sure how to remove 'cuesheet_ng', since the setup menu
requires first starting 'audacious2'. So as 'root' I moved
'cuesheet_ng' to '/tmp':
# find it
% dlocate cuesheet_ng
audacious-plugins-extra: /usr/lib/audacious/Input/cuesheet_ng.so
# move it
mv /usr/lib/audacious/Input/cuesheet_ng.so /tmp/cuesheet
Still crashes. With a difference; it seems without 'cuesheet_ng',
Thread 3 doesn't persist:

Oops, I didn't look at the backtrace close enough. It's thread 1 that
had the segmentation fault (address 0xb7da075a). It looks like
cuesheet_ng.so is fine and timidity.so is the culprit.

This backtrace points to the timidity plugin and a bug that I've already
fixed in upstream (the fix will be in 2.2 release and is in the
alphas/betas available now as source tarballs.)

The cuesheet_ng plugin is known to have problems. Try removing it.
(It's no longer distributed upstream.)

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Notes for one-liner fans. "Here" files are OK, but a one-liner is easiest to copy & paste.
After a bit of trial & error, I came up with:
# Run 'empty' on 'gdb -q audacious2' to automate 'gdb' session.
# Output results to a temp file.
empty -f -L /tmp/e.log gdb -q audacious2 ; empty -w 'gdb)' 'run\n' ; empty -w 'gdb)' 'thread apply all backtrace\n' ; empty -s 'q\n' ; empty -s 'y\n' ; empty -k ; cat /tmp/e.log
...it uses the minimum-overhead 'empty' util, found in Debian's
'empty-expect' package. Tricky syntax 'empty' has, it needs an easier
front-end util.
Attached is a simple 'empty' front-end script; not robust, (multiple
instances would probably mess up), but it works. New one-liner:
empty-ez.sh 'gdb -q audacious2' 'gdb)' 'run' 'gdb)' 'thread apply all backtrace' '' 'q' '' 'y'

After reading that, as 'root' I did:
mv /usr/lib/audacious/Input/timidity.so /tmp/tim
...after which 'audacious2' worked. And Matti Hämäläinen reports fixing
that 'timidity.so' bug upstream. Thanks guys!
(One reservation. Apparently a buggy plugin caused the hang. If so,
it seems the current plugin design might be needlessly fragile. It
makes sense if I ran 'audacious foo.mid' that a buggy 'timidity.so'
would cause trouble, but even so, why must there be a crash with no
parameters at all, or with 'audacious foo.ogg'?)
