Package: mozilla-mplayer
Version: 3.55-1
User: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
Usertag: debian-edu

When visiting <URL: http://www.filmarkivet.no/open/ >, the plugin
start as it should, but fail to start any video playing. It seem to
print messages in a loop about initiating a RTP subsession for
video/H264 and how it is going to play a MP4 file using RTSP, but no
video.

The page is the front page for the Norwegian national movie archive,
and quite important for us here in norway.

Happy hacking,

I found a solution. Changing the configuration to use TCP for RTSP
streams got the video streaming. Why is this not the default? Would
it be an idea to test with TCP if the current default isn't working,
to get this working out of the box?

I did some more investigation. The URL passed to mplayer by the
plugin is

This URL contain content like this:

When I test with gmplayer behind NAT with a command line like this, no
video is played:

  gmplayer rtsp://qtsrv1.ella.no/filmarkivet/movie/nfi_vignett.mp4

while when I add the -rtsp-stream-over-tcp option, it work:

  gmplayer -rtsp-stream-over-tcp \
    rtsp://qtsrv1.ella.no/filmarkivet/movie/nfi_vignett.mp4

With VLC, this work out of the box, and this make me suspect it will
automatically try TCP if UDP fail. Perhaps an idea for mplayer to get
it workout out of the box when the client is behind NAT?

Again, shouldn't this be an mplayer bug?

I ran wireshark on a vlc session, and discovered that vlc will use
RTSP over TCP by default. This is the reason it work out of the box
with vlc. Please change the default in mozilla-mplayer to do the
same. The required change in the plugin would be to change the
default rtsp-use-tcp configuration option from 0 to 1.

It would be great if this patch would be included in Lenny.

I believe this patch should be sufficient to change the default.

I guess it depend on the view of the mplayer developers. I have no
idea why they use UDP by default.

My priority at the moment is to get as many of the sites listed on
<URL:http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/BrowserMultimedia> as possible
to work with mozilla-mplayer in Lenny, to make sure the sites reported
by Debian Edu users work out of the box. Not sure if an upload of
mplayer will make it in time, while the change to mplayerplug-in seem
simple enough.

You filled the bug http://bugs.debian.org/491403 in Debian BTS
against the package mplayerplug-in. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/557591. That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
