I discovered this problem with a patched version of kaffine-mozilla
and the movies available from <URL:http://www.filmarkivet.no/open/>.
Kaffine is unable to play the movies.  After using kaffine-mozilla to
locate the movie URL, I tested it in vlc too.  It fail. :(

To replicate the issue, call vlc like this:

  vlc 'rtsp://qtsrv1.ella.no/filmarkivet/movie/p_40648.mp4'

It print this message and play only the sound:

  VLC media player 0.8.6e Janus
  [00000295] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `h264'.
  VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
  [00000273] main playlist: stopping playback

Please get this video working with vlc.

please check if ffmpeg appears in vlc -vvv --list --no-plugins-cache?

If not:
  - uninstall the unofficial ffmpeg packages you may have (libavcodec,
    libavformat, libavutil)
  - delete your plugin cache (~/.vlc/cache/plugin*)

if ffmpeg still not appear in the list, paste the error you get

It is listed.

Does this mean you are unable to reproduce the error?  I tried to
reproduce it myself, but vlc only seem to hang, and did not produce
any error messages. :( No idea why.  Perhaps the service is down at
the moment. :/

I tested again this morning, and was now able to reach the server.
Used the kaffine-mozilla plugin to figure out the URL, and then passed
the URL into vlc.  vlc is unable to handle

  vlc 'http://www.filmarkivet.no/open/film/playlist.aspx?teasers=1&pl=smil'

I extracted the play list manually using GET, and asked vlc to play
the first one

  vlc rtsp://qtsrv1.ella.no/filmarkivet/movie/nfi_vignett.mp4

This worked.  So, the plugin fail to play the videos on the
<URL:http://www.filmarkivet.no/open/> page, but it seem to be a
playlist parsing issue, and not a codec issue.  It is not the only
page failing with the vlc plugin.  See

list among the pages I test.

Hm, according to <URL:http://wiki.videolan.org/SubtitlesCodec>, SMIL
is not supported before version 0.9.0.  I hope it will solve the
issue.  Checking the download page for VLC indicate that version 0.9.0
isn't released yet.  I guess it will be to late for Lenny. :(
