Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: genisoimage
Version: 9:1.1.8-1
Severity: normal
I tried the following:
euclid:~ $ genisoimage -J -r -o /tmp/mathcamp.iso mathcamp-2007
I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings)
genisoimage: Directories too deep for 'mathcamp-2007/yearbook-2007/html/photo/img/thumb/.svn/tmp/props' (7) max is 6.
But in the NOTES section of genisoimage(1) it says:
If genisoimage is creating a filesystem image with Rock Ridge
attributes and the directory nesting level of the source directory tree
is too much for ISO9660, genisoimage will do deep directory relocation.
This results in a directory called RR_MOVED in the root directory of
the CD. You cannot avoid this directory.
In the source code, though, genisoimage/tree.c, there is a comment
(lines 2417 onwards):
/*
* XXX to prevent this, we would need to add
* XXX support for RR directory relocation
* XXX to find_or_create_directory()
*/
So it appears to have no support for directory relocation.
Hmmm.

Hi,
just bumping to confirm the bug and stating that it might actually be new. I
regularly do (from every two weeks to one month) backups through genisoimage
of a directory with often deeply nested subdirectories and the problem did
not appear before this version.
Thus the bug has probably been introduced by one of the latest changes.

Hello,
I have additional information about the bug.
As it was the opportunity to try "git bisect" I tried to find the commit
that introduced the regression this way.
I took the 1.1.7 version as the "good" version (I tested, it created the
iso with a deep directory structure ok) and 1.1.8 as the "bad" version, in
git terms. I used a small "test.sh" script that rebuilt genisoimage each
time git "switched" commits, and created a small deep directory structure
to test genisoimage on it.
Here are the last lines of running "git bisect run ./test.sh":

Hence the problematic revision seems to be the 807th one if I am to believe

I'm not familiar enough with the codebase to take a guess :-(

Hi,
Debian uses an extremely outdated version of mkisofs and in
addition added new bugs.
The official mkisofs correctly handles deep directory relocation
in all cases since 2 years.

Followup-For: Bug #488482
Hi,
it's-a-me again, I found some courage and tried to look for what specific
change might have introduced the problem. You will find the attached patch
which seems to solve it. A few more details:
- I tested the patch by comparing versions 1.1.7 and 1.1.8 with the patch
with "-v -v" parameter and both versions compiled with -DDEBUG for
genisoimage: Except for the version number and the "X% done, estimate
finish...", there is no difference
- The ISO image was produced with -R (not -r or -xa, thus they might need
testing too). By mounting it with "-o loop" and exploring the deep
directories I could access the files
- I have no clue why this patch works except that it was among "default"
value settings and it made my coder-sense tingle.

Thanks very much for the analysis here - it looks very useful. The
change that went in in the last release was from a patch by Roman to
preserve directory permissions. Maybe he can comment on the effects
here...

Hi.
I'm sorry for introducing this bug. When I was porting the patch I do
some changes and forgot to turn back this change.

Ok, no problem. So that change is not actually needed for the perms
patch then?

What is the goal of and-ing the file mode to 777 ? I more or less
understood that it cleared specific modes ("the file is a link", or things
like that) and that it may have a role in writing files into the index of
the iso fs. Actually I may be wrong-headed in my understanding, and if it
is not possible to explain what happens here in just a few sentences, don't
bother :-P
It's just that I had some difficulties tracking the role of the statbuf
variable here and it was the introduced change that made the less sense in
the proposed patch, hence it could be said that I found the bug almost by
sheer luck.
Anyway, thanks for the quick reply :-)
