hi

I tried to upgrade my etch box to lenny (the
reason is that I have new hardware that needs newer kernels)

the first run of 'aptitude dist-upgrade' failed,
and it told me to run 'dpkg --configure -a'

the problem is that this latter fails,
and so I am now stuck here, unable to do anything...

(I tagged this bug 'important', but its severity is
'critical' since as long as 'dpkg --configure -a'
does not succesfully complete, I am unable to run
apt-get or aptitude to complete the upgrade)

I attach a typescript of 'dpkg --configure -a'

Hi,

I just independently discovered this problem: I tried to clean up my
sid chroot and purged the plethora of build dependencies I just
installed for abiword. Howver, I did not purge abiword itself, thus I
got a long list of errors, and finally:

dpkg: too many errors, stopping
dpkg: ../../src/packages.c:265: process_queue: Assertion `!queue.length' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)

The first line is ok, but the two others should be handled more
gracefully. dpkg shouldn't core dump.

I can reproduce this in my sid chroot with

  dpkg -P `dpkg -l lib*|awk '{print $2}'`

Please keep in mind that this probably *will* purge a lot of -dev
packages, so try it in a throwaway chroot.

Thanks,

Martin

hi,

I managed to exit from the impasse by manually running 'dpkg --configure
package' on single packages... but it was quite a PITA

BTW, it seems that my problem was due to perl : perl did not cleanly
upgrade from etch to lenny , due to a symbol not found in its own
gettext library

I have reproduced this bug in the course of a routine upgrade to my
main not really very unusual lenny box. I have a reproduceable test
case for a /var/lib/dpkg. I'm not attaching that to this bug because
I intend to fix it but if I haven't done so soon please ping me and I
will upload the relevant files.

As a workaround I would recommend
  --abort-after=10000
which managed to get me out of the hole.

Ian.

Here's a case where I accidentally hit ^C while doing a
apt-get dist-upgrade. The code asks me to run
dpkg --configure -a ,
and when I do, it fails an assertion.

It's a different assertion, but in the same module: packages.c,
line 221.

For my version of the bug (dpkg: ../../src/packages.c:221: process_queue: Assertion `dependtry <= 4' failed.)
there is a partial work-around.

*If* you know what package it is stuck on, you can remove that
package with dpkg, then re-install. I don't know how to find
which package to remove, though. (For me, it was an obvious,
special case...)

I did this:

 sudo dpkg --configure nvi
 dpkg: error processing nvi (--configure):
package nvi is not ready for configuration
   cannot configure (current status `triggers-awaited')
   Errors were encountered while processing:
    nvi
    $ sudo dpkg --triggers-only -a
    $ sudo dpkg --configure -a

Yes, sorry, but I really didn't have time then (I was already late and
was bashing out my mails in a hurry while fixing lots of other stuff
here) and then of course I forgot about it :-(.

I've uploaded it now FWIW at
 http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~ian/2008-07-24/varlibdpkg-483655.tar.gz
but the fix is trivial, and attached.

The assertion (and hence the bug) was introduced by me in my triggers
patch, and it causes this assertion failure whenever (and only when)
dpkg is stopping processing packages (for configure or remove) due to
too many errors. The assertion is overzealous and should be bypassed
in that case.

Since the only effect is to turn a correct nonzero exit into a
coredump (and incidentally to suppress the intended display of the
list of unprocessed packages) I think this bug is minor. But it
should be fixed for lenny; it is easy to see that the fix is correct.

Ian.

   * Small fix in "3.0 (quilt)" source format when using non-standard name

   * Handle debian.tar.gz files like diff.gz in dpkg-buildpackage and

   * Add "armel" to /usr/share/dpkg/archtable. Closes: #487768
   * Modified Dpkg::BuildOptions to recognize and use spaces as separator
in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS (in order to conform with the Debian policy
     ruling established in #430649).
   * Fix dpkg-source to not use -i and -I by default with "1.0" source
     packages. Closes: #495138
