Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.0~rc1-1

When I view pages such as the simplified test case at
http://ondioline.org/~paul/fade/ instead of the background image I see
overlapping chunks of the rest of my screen[0]. I get various strange
effects if I move the Iceweasel window around, drag an xterm over top of
it, etc. If I switch workspaces, I get chunks of the previous workspace.

The problem is present in Iceweasel with a blank profile. I think the
problem may have been present in Iceweasel 3.0~b5.

The problem is not present with the 1.9.0 Minefield nightly I tried[1].
A friend informs me that the problem is not present in Ubuntu hardy
heron's version 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3.

I am using Debian amd64.

Of course, I would have to get all my bright ideas *after* I filed the bug.

Anyway, I tried the test case under Xephyr. Cannot reproduce.

Then I remembered I'm using an ancient video driver because of
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13326 so I just tried
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.3.1-1: cannot reproduce the problem.

So I guess you can go ahead and file this one under PEBKAC.

This is probably a XAA/EXA issue. If you're using XAA, setting the
XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps option might help.

I have been having the same problem, with many images, especially
scaled ones. I'm gathering that this is a known problem with using
XAA? The closest explanation I could find was #433331, but this is
clearly not a compositing window manager.

Switching to EXA made images render correctly. On the other hand,
iceweasel crashed within minutes while looking at bug reports on this
subject so I think I shall try XAA again...

I'm getting weird image effects as well. I am using standard Debian X
display drivers for my Radeon. I have no idea how to set EXA versus XAA.

First, try to check if you are using EXA or XAA (check the Xorg logs, in
/var/log/Xorg.n.log where n in usually 0)

If you are using EXA, try switching to XAA, by adding:
        Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
in the Section "Device" in /etc/xorg.conf.

If you are using XAA, in the same section, add
        Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmap" "on"

XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps worked. For the record, it looks OK in EXA, too,
but the slow scrolling is horrible so I had to switch back to XAA. I'm
glad there is a solution to the background pix thing for XAA.

Just in case anyone else is having trouble fixing this on their computer, for
me, the option that worked was adding the following lines in the "Device"
section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf

        Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
        Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" "on"

note that the second option is XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps, not XaaNoOffscreenPixmap
as suggested above. Maybe either is good, but the latter didn't work for me.

I was also seeing this in Iceweasel 3 (Version: 3.0~rc2-2) on lenny,
amd64, with the nv driver.

Adding:

Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" "on"

to the device section for my nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7600 GS],
solved the problem for me as well.

I see this as well, on multiple X servers for different video
hardware -- and regardless of the effect of tweaking X server
options, I think this should be treated as a serious bug in
iceweasel, as I do not see this bug with the official Firefox 3.0
binary.
