Date: Fri, 23 May 2008 10:44:09 +0200
Package: php-pear
Version: 5.2.6-1
Severity: serious
User: debian-qa@lists.debian.org
Usertags: qa-ftbfs-20080522 qa-ftbfs
Justification: FTBFS on i386

Hi,

A recent change in php-pear causes many packages to FTBFS. As an
example, see php-net-ipv4:

Relevant part:
>  /usr/bin/fakeroot debian/rules binary
> dh_testdir
> dh_testroot
> dh_clean -k
> dh_installdirs
> cp package.xml Net_IPv4-1.3.0/package.xml;
> /usr/bin/pear install -n -f -R debian/php-net-ipv4 Net_IPv4-1.3.0/package.xml;
> /usr/bin/pear: line 28: /usr/bin/php: No such file or directory
> /usr/bin/pear: line 28: exec: /usr/bin/php: cannot execute: No such file or directory
> make: *** [install] Error 126

Do you want to revert that change and depend on php5-cli instead of
recommending it? (recommends are not installed by default while
building). Or should I file the 25+ RC bugs on PHP packages, asking them
to build-depend on php5-cli? (I'm fine with any of those)

The full build log is available from:
   http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2008/05/22

A list of current common problems and possible solutions is available at
http://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/FTBFS . You're welcome to contribute!

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.

Didn't notice this side-effect, the old behaviour will be reverted.
Do you by any chance have the list of those packages FTBFS because of
that change? so we can coordinate the change, depending on a consensus
of course.

What's the status on this now, what do we need to do to get the bug resolved?

I fixed the pear FTBFS a couple of weeks ago in SVN, but I haven't got time to
sort out the other FTBFS caused by the suhosin patch.

Will report the bug upstream right now.

We discussed this indeed, but since we have another build issue with the
package on alpha and those FTBFS'es don't affect testing, what immediate
gain would there be to upload php5 now while it would still not migrate
due to the alpha build issue? Is there a concrete gain?

Reduce my number of FTBFS by about 25 failures, and be able to find
other failures in those 25 packages. But I'm fine with waiting.

I suggest we forward our most recent findings about the arm/sparc findings
to upstream, and meanwhile upload a new package version. It seems the
solution is not as trivial as upgrading to a newer compiler, so waiting
now doesn't add much value.

 .
   [ Raphael Geissert ]
   * Lintian-based changes:
     - also install a lintian override for libapache2-mod-php5filter
     - fixed the generic lintian overrides so they are meaningful
     - dropping linda overrides, linda is gone now
     - s/meta-package/metapackage
   * debian/control:
     - Updated php5's description so it mentions three instead of
        only two server-side SAPIs
     - Depend on php5-cli in php-pear (Closes: #482517)
       + Previous change reverted because of PEAR packages FTBFS
     - {B-,}Depend on tzdata to avoid crashes caused by the tz ext patch
     - Dropped some versioned {b-,}dependencies that are satisified
        even on sarge
   * php.ini-*: state that when using a custom save_path,
     gc_probability should also be set (Closes: #388808, #321460)
   * tzdb-nofree_ents_ifnotzdata.patch: avoid free'ing ents when the tz dir does
     not exist (Closes: #483461)
 .
   [ Sean Finney ]
   * Fix for CVE-2008-2829: unsafe usage of deprecated imap functions
     Patch: CVE-2008-2829.patch
   * Modifications to suhosin.patch due to alignment problems on some
     architectures. Thanks to Stefan Esser for the initial suggestion.
     (Closes: #481737).
   * Rename the apache2 filter module to libphp5filter.so, to prevent
     conflicting filenames for symbols in the debug package.
