Package: php5
Version: 5.2.6-1
Severity: serious

There was an error while trying to autobuild your package, and actually
i have now idea why.

I tried to build php5 on both sparc buildds, both stop at the same target.

If you need php5 build-deps installed on spergers sid-chroot, contact me.
sperger.d.o is the same machine model as spontini, thus it should be
reproducable.

FYI, I tried to build php5 5.2.6-1 on arm without the mysql_r patch,
and it did not make any difference. It still gives an error at the
same location (but no core dump).

Cheers,
Stefan

Was tzdata installed when the package was built?
use_embedded_timezonedb.patch tries to free some memory even when not
allocated (happens when the tzdata dir doesn't exist).

Thanks for checking the mysql_r patch.

I did another test build, this time without the suhosin patch (and no
other changes). This build succeeded.

BTW, for both builds I had gcc-4.3 4.3.0-4 installed, which is not
current anymore but it's the same version that was used by the arm
buildd.

Cheers,
Stefan

Thanks for all your efforts, I'm now forwarding the bug to upstream.

Hello,

if I see correctly you are using an old GCC on a sparc. And Suhosin
crashs with a bus error.

Well that is no suprise. Older GCC on sparc for some reason optimizes a
memcpy() away into direct memory access. Of course this is illegal,
because this results in not aligned memory address.

Solution: Use a fixed compiler.

I probably was not very clear on my previous message, my bad.

As you can see in [1] it crashes in arm, armel, ia64, and sparc, so it is not
sparc-specific.
All the build logs available are from build attempts using gcc 4.3.0.

So could you please take a look at it?

As stated in the bug report, Stefan Fritsch already made some build attempts
on arm with gcc 4.3.

I did yet another test build. This time php5 5.2.5-3 from testing in
the same (by now outdated) unstable chroot as the other builds. This
build failed in the same way as the 5.2.6-1 build. Maybe it is a
compiler problem after all.

I will do a rebuild with the most current gcc next.

Stefan

With up-to-date chroot and gcc-4.3 4.3.1-2 the build of 5.2.6-1 still
fails with the known error.

 I just tried to compile php5 on sparc64 (sid). I'm not sure if this
 helps, but this is the backtrace from the bus error:
  (btw gcc --version: gcc (Debian 4.3.1-2) 4.3.)

Hi,

sorry for the late response...

I see that meanwhile a backtrace was posted. And like I thought it is
exactly the problem I thought it is:

It crashes in the following macro
*+# define SUHOSIN_MM_END_CANARY_PTR(block) \
+    (size_t*)(((char*)(ZEND_MM_DATA_OF(block))) +
((zend_mm_block*)(block))->info.size + END_MAGIC_SIZE)
+
+# define SUHOSIN_MM_SET_END_CANARY(block) do { \
+        size_t *p = SUHOSIN_MM_END_CANARY_PTR(block); \
+        memcpy(p, &heap->canary_3, CANARY_SIZE); \
+    } while (0)
+

*After digging through the internet I realized that maybe using a size_t
pointer is what causes the problem. I read it that something like a
size_t pointer MUST be aligned when assigned, otherwise undefined stuff
might occur. Could you please try to change size_t * in both macros to
char *? If we are lucky this means the memcpy is no longer optimized away.

Stefan Esser

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
hi everyone,

i just ran a build last night with the modified patch, which unfortunately
failed. *however*, it failed later than before, and looking at the crash it
looks like there's at least a third place where unaligned access is
occurring:

(gdb) run
Starting program: /home/seanius/php5-5.2.6/cgi-build/sapi/cli/php
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
[New Thread 0xf7f92f60 (LWP 31508)]

Program received signal SIGBUS, Bus error.
[Switching to Thread 0xf7f92f60 (LWP 31508)]
_zend_mm_free_int (heap=0x5085c0, p=0xf75c4030)
    at /home/seanius/php5-5.2.6/Zend/zend_alloc.c:2018
2018        SUHOSIN_MM_CHECK_CANARIES(mm_block, "efree()");

and the relevant code:

+# define SUHOSIN_MM_CHECK_CANARIES(block, MFUNCTION) do { \
+        size_t *p = SUHOSIN_MM_END_CANARY_PTR(block), check; \
+               if (((block)->info.canary_1 != heap->canary_1) ||
((block)->info
.canary_2 != heap->canary_2)) { \
+                       canary_mismatch: \
+            zend_suhosin_log(S_MEMORY, "canary mismatch on " MFUNCTION " -
heap
 overflow detected"); \
+            exit(1); \
+               } \
+        memcpy(&check, p, CANARY_SIZE); \

so in other words a char* from the previously modified macro is being assigned
to the size_t *p, which is then possibly not aligned and passed to memcpy.
i'll try changing these to a char * too and see if it makes any difference.

br,
	sean

Hi, I tried to collect some more info.

this is a try to see what happening. The problem is
/usr/local/src/php5-5.2.6/Zend/zend_alloc.c:1991
    SUHOSIN_MM_SET_END_CANARY(best_fit);

This is:
size_t *p = (size_t*)(((char*)(ZEND_MM_DATA_OF(best_fit))) + ((zend_mm_block*)(best_fit))->info.size + END_MAGIC_SIZE);
memcpy(p, &heap->canary_3, CANARY_SIZE);

disassemble shows:
0x0025931c <_zend_mm_alloc_int+940>:    add  %i1, 0x18, %g3
0x00259320 <_zend_mm_alloc_int+944>:    ld  [ %l1 + 0x254 ], %g1
0x00259324 <_zend_mm_alloc_int+948>:    st  %g1, [ %i0 + %g3 ]

size_t *p = (size_t*)(((char*)(ZEND_MM_DATA_OF(best_fit))) + ((zend_mm_block*)(best_fit))->info.size + END_MAGIC_SIZE);
			 ------------------------      ---------------------------------------   --------------
			 = best_fit +                   = size (function arg, stored in %i1)      fix_val at compile time
			   fix_val calculated at
			   compile time

0x0025931c is: size + two fix_vals, stored into %g3
0x00259320 is: load heap->canary_d into %g1 (addr of heap is in %l1)
0x00259324 is: store %g1 into "best_fit (%i0) + %g3
which is the same as
	 store %g1 into "bestfit + size + two fix_vals"
since bestfit is aligned and the fix_vals are 0x18 (does not change the alignment)
the problem must be the argument size.

#if SUHOSIN_PATCH
            SUHOSIN_MM_SET_CANARIES(best_fit);
            ((zend_mm_block*)best_fit)->info.size = size;
            SUHOSIN_MM_SET_END_CANARY(best_fit);
#endif

maybe instead of size it's better to use true_size

atm, i try to compile php this way, but my machine is not the fastest.

and hello again,

i can report back that making a similar change in the third place seems to
have resolved the FTBFS problems.

Stefan, attached you will find a patch against the patch. since this may be
hard to read i've also attached it in interdiff format, which should be a
little easier for the eyes :)

Changes:
 php5 (5.2.6-2) unstable; urgency=high
 .
   [ Raphael Geissert ]
   * Lintian-based changes:
     - also install a lintian override for libapache2-mod-php5filter
     - fixed the generic lintian overrides so they are meaningful
     - dropping linda overrides, linda is gone now
     - s/meta-package/metapackage
   * debian/control:
     - Updated php5's description so it mentions three instead of
        only two server-side SAPIs
     - Depend on php5-cli in php-pear (Closes: #482517)
       + Previous change reverted because of PEAR packages FTBFS
     - {B-,}Depend on tzdata to avoid crashes caused by the tz ext patch
     - Dropped some versioned {b-,}dependencies that are satisified
        even on sarge
   * php.ini-*: state that when using a custom save_path,
     gc_probability should also be set (Closes: #388808, #321460)
   * tzdb-nofree_ents_ifnotzdata.patch: avoid free'ing ents when the tz dir does
     not exist (Closes: #483461)
 .
   [ Sean Finney ]
   * Fix for CVE-2008-2829: unsafe usage of deprecated imap functions
     Patch: CVE-2008-2829.patch
   * Modifications to suhosin.patch due to alignment problems on some
     architectures. Thanks to Stefan Esser for the initial suggestion.
     (Closes: #481737).
   * Rename the apache2 filter module to libphp5filter.so, to prevent
     conflicting filenames for symbols in the debug package.
