Severity: wishlist

With the upcoming xulrunner transition, libxul-dev is going to disappear.

I already sent instructions on what you should be doing in
http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2008/05/msg00009.html

This bug report is mostly to help follow the transition going.

FYI, I will start NMUing plugins and components next week, and will break
the remaining packages by uploading xulrunner 1.9 in unstable on May 25.

Though help will be appreciated, I'll also prepare updated packages for
these during this week and next.

Cheers,

Mike

FWIW, upstream 2.0.5 addresses most necessary code changes:
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?group_id=6999&release_id=575431
- Compiles with xulrunner 1.9, but a lot of functionality is disabled due
to being no longer exposed by xulrunner (or not working)
    - MyPortal
    - User stylesheets
    - Remembering passwords
    - http authentication

Note these four are bullshit, and galeon can be patched to have these work.

Let's already get galeon built against xulrunner-1.9 first, and focus on
these regressions later.

Can you handle this or shall I prepare a NMU ?

Mike

Right, I knew about these regressions; I didn't upload the new upstream
nor didn't spend time moving to XUL 1.9 because I din't want to push
these regressions to unstable, nor silently to testing. I'm not sure
people want a Galeon which can't remember passwords or do http
 authentication, at least I don't.

I don't think it's a good idea; I'd rather keep Galeon built against
the older xulrunner. If the old xulrunner can't be kept in testing
because we don't want to release with it, then galeon and xulrunner
should be kicked from there until an usable galeon is available for
 xulrunner 1.9.

It will be harder to get a useable galeon in shape if we can't have people
actually testing it for regressions, in case there are more.
xulrunner 1.8 *is* going to be kicked out and *not* released in Lenny.

Here is my offer: you get galeon 2.0.5 to build against xulrunner-dev in
pkg-gnome svn, and I get at least http authentication to work, and we
put that in unstable.

What do you think ?

Nice offer, thanks! Are you assuming it's currently in pkg-gnome?
 It's in pkg-galeon currently.
I will simply upload galeon 2.0.5 to sid in the next couple of days
with a serious bug open for the http auth regression.

My brain was thinking pkg-galeon, but my fingers typed pkg-gnome.

Well, I mostly have the patch already, because the same additions were
required for kazehakase ; it only needs to be adapted a bit, so you
don't have to upload straight, you can wait for my patch, it won't take
long ;)

Also note that I'll be adding nsIBadCertListener back in next xulrunner
upload (soonish), which means galeon will have to be rebuilt against that
new version anyways.

        Hey,

This is just a note that I'm fighting to get galeon to build with
xulrunner 1.9 (despite the new upstream version claiming it builds).

I've overcome a couple of API changes and I'm currently trying to port
 GConsoleMessage().

I'll push my changes to SVN tomorrow as they are not in commitable
state and really ain't pretty right now. I hope I'll manage to
understand how to implement GConsoleMessage() and wont meet too many
 other API changes.

   Cheers,

        Hi,

I didn't expect my journey to build galeon against xulrunner 1.9 to be
so long; I reached the point today where I don't really know how to
continue further; it would probably require understanding many concepts
of XPCOM glue which I'm far from mastering. I've pushed the decent
changes to SVN as individual patches:
    svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-galeon/unstable/galeon

I tried some random changes in the attached random changes patch; the
only one I'm pretty confident with is the MOZILLA_HOME one. The other
ones were attempts to get the thing to build. I could reach the final
link with them in place, but the linking fails due to hidden symbols
being missing. At this point I know it's related to glue things, but
there are too many hacks in place for me to claim this is useful or
safe to run by Debian users.

I welcome any help in finishing the port; it probably needs some hours
of someone knowing how mozembed should now be used with glue defines
 and links.

Be careful with some of the recent changes I introduced, I'm not too
confident with the fixes I came up with. :-/

   Thanks,

I won't have time to take a look before tonight, or even later, but here
is a quick take: you don't need rpath. Link against the standalone glue
(libxul-embedding or libxul-embedding-unstable) and be done with it.

(I probably don't need one in the new case, but if I want galeon to
build against old and new geckos (to send patches upstream), it's
easier to conform to the -rpath $(MOZILLA_HOME) case.)

Ok; then I guess we need an AM_CONDITIONAL around the Makefile.am
snippet adding the rpath, or we need to move the flags addition to
configure.in logic. Thanks for the hint on this part. I'd rather have
you or someone familiar with the glue and linking rules look at the
current usage of .pc files, includes, defines, and rpathes as a whole
rather than me continuing random incantations here to get a binary
 though. :-)

 .
   * Update menu file for new menu layout.
   * Use lsb_release to tweak User-Agent string; bdep on lsb-release.
   * Drop dh_installmime call as bdeps ensure cdbs >= 0.4.35.
   * Set GConf defaults via dh_gconf instead of patching the schema: add
     debian/galeon.gconf-defaults and drop patch 31_customise-settings.
   * Update presubj template; reword and change browser names to use the Debian
     branding (Iceape, Iceweasel).
   * Update watch file slightly as it broke with some SF.net update again and
wasn't using the format supported by the redirector.
   * New upstream release; closes: #473702.
     - Supports building against xulrunner-1.9, with regressions.
     - Document regressions in galeon.NEWS.
     - Build-dep on xulrunner-dev (>= 1.9~) instead of libxul-dev;
       closes: #480799; depend on xulrunner (>= 1.9~).
     - Drop patch 10_configure-check-for-mozjs as JS support is pulled via
       libxul-embedding.
     - New patch, 61_no-prefix-before-includes, drop directory before #includes
as headers are directly below the xulrunner-1.9 include root dir and
these dirs don't exist; also these are already -Included via
       mozilla/Makefile.am flags anyway.
     - New patch, 62_libxul-embedding-unstable, adds support for
       libxul-embedding-unstable gecko; build-dep on libnspr4-dev as we're
