Subject: uniform header for automated package maintenance emails
Date: Wed, 07 May 2008 11:52:59 +0200
Package: general
Severity: wishlist

With all the (helpful) email that a package maintainer gets nowadays, BTS,
PTS, Dak, DDPOMail robot, BTS link, etc., it becomes ever weirder to just
filter them into appropriate mail folders. To illustrate that, here are
procmail rules that I have assembled over time:

* ^X-Debian-PR-Message:
* ^X-Katie:
* ^X-PTS-
* ^From:.*(installer|katie|dak)@((ftp-master|spohr)\.debian\.org|backports\.org)
* ^From: DDPOMail robot <lucas-ddpomail@debian\.org>
* ^X-BTS-Link:

I think it would be very nice to press these into some common form, such as

X-Debian: BTS
X-Debian: DAK
X-Debian: PTS
X-Debian: BTS-link

or alternatively

X-Debian-BTS: $moreinfo
X-Debian-DAK: $moreinfo
....

Maybe there is a quasi-standard for constructing these X- headers.

Comments?

I think that would be a great thing to have. It could be implemented as
an addition to the existing stuff, of course, to make transition easier.

While I think most of daks mails do have X-Katie or X-DAK headers I do
like X-Debian: FOO and so will go and _add_ this to *all* dak mails
now. Including the queue daemon. Should be merged later today.

So lets create a new standard by doing stuff. Lets define:

a. Every tool can add X-whatever headers as it sees fit.

b. Every tool sending (machine generated) mail to Debian Developers
   should add a header of the form

     X-Debian: $TOOL

   and so clearly mark that it is an automagic generated mail by
   $TOOL. Every bit more information, like what script exactly did
   generate the mail, should be in seperate X-whatever headers.[1]

Unless someone cries I send a little mail to d-d-a about it tomorrow.

[1] for dak that would be X-Katie and X-DAK.

Please, not the graphviz one again, I only just finished the therapy I had
to start after I read it the first time. I'm sure this one was written by
some sort of non-human entity. I would go for lawyers.

Are these headers supposed to be mail headers, or pseudo-headers such
as the BTS accepts. I thought the former, but I just got this from
Dak:

    To: camrdale@gmail.com
    Subject: Processing of torrentflux_2.3-9_amd64.changes
    Message-Id: <E1JttUV-0002xh-TY@ries.debian.org>
    From: Archive Administrator <dak@ftp-master.debian.org>
    Date: Wed, 07 May 2008 23:56:07 +0000

    X-Debian: DAK
    torrentflux_2.3-9_amd64.changes uploaded successfully to localhost
    along with the files:
     torrentflux_2.3-9.dsc
     torrentflux_2.3-9.diff.gz
     torrentflux_2.3-9_all.deb

    Greetings,

           Your Debian queue daemon

Is that a bug, or were my assumptions wrong? FWIW, I think using real
(not pseudo) mail headers is a mildly better solution, but I'm happy
either way.

Thanks,
Cameron

Bug, should be in (real) headers. :)

I would like it if the proposal also had something allong the lines that if
the message concerns a specific package, it would add a X-Debian-Package:
<packagename> header aswell (e.g. DAK, testing migration, PTS mails etc), to
make the following things uniform:

X-Debian-PR-Package: apt-file
X-Testing-Watch-Package: apt-file
...

cheers,
Thijs

It's probably too late, but wouldn't have been better to use the
following instead?

 X-Debian-Tool: $TOOL
 X-Debian-Package: $PACKAGE

Thanks,

The -Tool is pretty redundant.

(And also closing this bug as its implemented)
