This packages eases managing /etc with git. It tracks the original
configurations from the packages in one branch and the local changes in
another branch. Due to this you profit from the improved merge
 capabilities of git.
 .
It also tracks the git directory outside of /etc to make as less as
possible changes to /etc and don't conflict with other approaches.

The last time I've checked etckeeper it didn't track the original files
and it placed the git directory in /etc.

About the second one I'm not shure it is really useful, but the first one
gives you the possibility to see what you've changed:

  etcgit diff master local_config

And the merge of the new config files is done by git, which might result
in fewer conflicts than the merge done by dpkg.

Bye, Jörg.

retitle 479706 RFP: etcgit -- manage /etc with git
noowner 479706
thanks

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of etcgit back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 18 months.

If you are still interested in adopting etcgit, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

retitle 479706 ITP: etcgit -- manage /etc with git
 owner 479706 !
 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing <479706@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

This request seems to have fallen off the radar.
I'm using etckeeper, but I would love to have etcgit's support for
keeping pristine conffiles in a separate branch, for purposes
of merging at upgrade time.
