Package: perl Version: 5.10.0-9 Severity: important Several tests of the svk package fails reproducible with several different glibc internal "free" checks like "invalid pointer" or "corrupted double-linked list". Many of the calls seems to go through swig, so maybe this problem is located there. | *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/perl: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0x0000000000674630 *** | ======= Backtrace: The memory corruption is very much related. The attached patch to PerlIO::via::dynamic works around it and makes the whole svk test suite pass for me. I'll try to come up with a minimal test case for the segfaults and report it as another Perl bug. I just sent this upstream as [rt.cpan.org #36260]. Bastian, you may want to apply the workaround to libperlio-via-dynamic-perl for now. Cloning, but feel free to close if you prefer to wait for Perl to get fixed. -- Niko Tyni ntyni@debian.org

The patch isn't applied upstream yet, probably because there were concerns
about it creating a memory leak.
Meanwhile, PerlIO-via-dynamic 0.13 has been released with this:

which would certainly create a memory leak if used as is with a locally
fixed 5.10.0.
Possibly the best option is to keep our Perl 5.10.0 unfixed for now
and update libperlio-via-dynamic-perl to 0.13. Bastian, please let me
know what you think.

Good point, thanks. I'm far from an expert on exploiting memory management bugs and certainly can't be sure about that. I'll prod upstream a bit. -- Niko

Hi,
I don't see this applied yet, hope it isn't falling through the cracks.
While PerlIO-via-dynamic-0.13 now has a workaround for 5.10.0, Bastian
Blank raised concerns about possible security implications of the double
frees in <http://bugs.debian.org/479698> (Cc'd).
Again, many thanks for looking at this.

No. Nicholas commented on IRC that this apparently creates no link,
and I'm not able to prove him false, so I'll probably apply this
patch. (or someone could beat me to it)

Update: the patch was applied upstream as change 34025 to bleadperl so I think it's OK now for us to backport it. As for the timeframe, I have 5.10.0-11 just about ready with the fix (and several others), but I'm still waiting for input from Brendan on a few things.
