Description : Time tracking applet for GNOME
Project Hamster helps you to keep track of how much time you spend on various
activities during the day. Whenever you move from one task to another, you
change your current activity in the GNOME applet.
It can present graphical statistics of how long you have spent on each task,
and may be useful for project management or keeping employee timesheets.

This is, great!
If you need testers, feel free to ping me on #debconf or

While writing debian/copyright, I discovered hamster/idle.c appears to
be GPLv2 only (when the rest of hamster-applet is GPLv3+). Forwarded to:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=547117
I could perhaps port it to python-xlib... the debian/copyright file says
GPLv2 only, but it's wrong (filed as #494495). I'm not having a good
day. :(
The other option is the g-p-m dbus API, but I seem to recall that it
doesn't /quite/ have what hamster-applet needs. Or idle tracking could
be dropped altogether.

Hmm. GPL-2 for packaging is ok if upstream code is GPL-2+. Muddy
waters, though, as it is questionable whether you "use" python-xlib's
packaging in hamster-applet, respectively if their packaging license
conflicts with hamster' GPL-3+. I would say it doesn't. After all,
hamster's packaging is not based on python-xlib's.

That would be unfortunate as it is an useful feature. Let's hope that
upstream solves it. It may be worth mentioning in the bugzilla#547117
the python-xlib alternative.
Thank you for your work so far!

This was fixed in Gajim's repository (from where the file is borrowed)
so you may just ask your upstream to sync it from there.
I guess you know very well, but for others watching this bug or reading
debian.devel.wnpp -- hamster-applet has been accepted as official module
in GNOME and will be part of 2.24.

The gajim ticket is at: http://trac.gajim.org/ticket/4187
Gajim changed the file to GPLv3 *only*, so hamster-applet upstream has
moved to use the g-p-m (or gnome-screensaver?) dbus api.
The hamster-applet 2.23.90 tarball is due on August 18th, but I'll
probably package an SVN snapshot before then.

Well, this is apparently another mistake, I'll notify them about it. I
tend to read diffs quickly (just because there are megabytes of them!)
so I really missed this important distinction.
Nevertheless, it is not a stopper for this ITP (assuming upstream
includes idle.c at the end); it will be a potential problem when the
current GNU licenses will be upgraded.
> so hamster-applet upstream has moved to use the g-p-m (or
> gnome-screensaver?) dbus api.
Because of this (almost obvious and easily fixable error)? By reading
the GNOME Bugzilla bug my impression is that your (hamster) upstream
just chose a more suitable API -- being a GNOME applet, portability
within environments doesn't matter much.
There seems to be another bug to make hamster-applet Python-only (I just
saw the title; don't know details/rationale), so upstream's decision
might be based on the overall evaluation of the reported bugs and/or
some unwritten (or "unspoken", as they say) design goals. Anyway, I'm
just speculating.
I'll pester the Gajim folks anyway.

I read all Gajim tickets in real time, because I'm subscribed to the
appropriate list. I'm aware of this issue very well, including the
developer in question. The problem is that they can't release 0.12 as
"GPLv3 or later" while having this developer disagree with the
relicensing, and having idle.c under GPLv3 only.
Anyway, perhaps your hamster guys did the right thing; and just to clear
any eventual cloud gathering -- I was merely clarifying as someone who
follows the Gajim project since the early days. It is entirely up to
you to decide what to do with hamster-applet, and I don't want to
interfere at all.
Good luck, and especially in maintaining GNU enscript :-}

Hi,
what's the status of the packaging efforts? I saw that upstream
maintains a debian/ in the svn repository. Looks like it's directed at
Ubuntu, but maybe forces should be joined..

Nearly done - I have worked on actually fixing the build today, and just
need to combine it with the copyright work this evening. I promise to
have it in NEW really soon now.
The problem with the upstream debian directory is that I don't like
their packaging. I suck. Sorry. :)

Is the source package available somewhere? I find myself depending on
that Hamster so I am willing to help.

There is always the option to just drop their debian/ and create it
anew :)

Hi Damyan,
I have put the hamster-applet packaging that I have so far in
collab-maint:
http://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/hamster-applet.git
It builds in pbuilder, but there are a lot of dpkg-shlibdeps warnings
about symbols not being found and so on. I'd very much welcome you
looking at it - feel free to commit there.
Once this is uploaded, perhaps I will run out of excuses for my time
management being so poor. ;)

Great!

I think these are harmless. The missing symbols are from Python, which
is already loaded when the hamster binary runs.
There are a couple of unneeded dependencies, though, that may be worth
elliminating. I'll take a look later, after trying to address the
grave problem at hand:
Which is, hamster-applet crashes on loading. This pretty much seemed
like gnome#558912[1]
[1] http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=558912
But the patch there does not help.
Running the applet with LANG=C works around the problem. Hmm. It seems
the bug is encoding-related. When I add an additional patch to make
the sqlite connection use the 'str' text_factory, everything works as
expected. I reported the problem as gnome#559061[2]
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=559061
I propose that the one-line patch[3] is added to the Debian package.
Is it OK with you if I use quilt for this?
[3] http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=121849
Thanks to your work on hamster!

Patches pushed (control/rules now include quilt).
Upstream seems[4] to prefer another approach, however:
This is just wrong. Hamster should use Unicode objects instead.
[4] http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=559061#c2
I am a complete python newbie so I feel a bit uncomfortable attempting
such a patch.
WRT library dependencies, I am not so sure anymore. At least
XUngrabKey is not a python-provided one :)
I'll dig some further. Not a show-stopper, I think as the applet seems
to run fine.
