Package: nexuiz
Version: 2.4-1
Severity: normal
The default keys to enter console are tilde and backquote. Pressing these has
no effect, though nexuiz recognizes them (I can type them in chat).
Additionally, the traditional key to bring console (at left of 1) has no
effect by default.
However, it is possible to set the key to, for example, "#", and it is then
possible to enter console. This happens on 1 machine on 1 tested, using
French Canadian keyboard layout.

that's wrong, pleas have a look at /usr/share/doc/nexuiz/FAQ.html, "How
do I open the console?". the default key combination to open the console
is documented there.

the "old" default key to open the console is deprecated nowadays,
because it wasn't consistent the same key on different keyboard layouts!
of course you can change the configuration to your needs and set the
"open console" command to whatever you prefer. but nexuiz' default
keyboard shortcut to open the in-game console should work on any kind of
keyboard layout!

d'oh, i forgot something: please tell me, if the documented keyboard

Ah. It does work. I feel a little bit blind, I never thought about looking at
the FAQ. But Shift+Escape working doesn't change much. IMO people are more
likely to change the key than to look at the FAQ. Of course, if you learn
that Shift+Esc works by default, then you don't have to change the key each
time you install Nexuiz.

i agree, that there are users, used to the key shortcuts of former
commercial games by id Software Inc.. but even id Software Inc. switched
to shift+esc since they were faced with the fact, that the prior chosen
key to open the in-game console wasn't available and/or consistent among
all available keyboard layouts.
so i'd say, having shift+esc as a reliable and, among any keyboard
layout, consistent default setting is the better choice. also keep in
mind, that someone, who never came in touch with a game based on one of
the older id Software Inc. engines, will not know the "old" key, but
will get confused when there are all possible keys for any keyboard
layout listed in the documentation.
for nexuiz it has always been shift+esc, which also applies to all
ioQuake3-engine based games, like OpenArena, Termulous and so on.

I disagree. I didn't know that id games used Shift+Esc nowadays, thanks for
pointing that. Nevertheless, if Nexuiz supports Shift+Esc, that means it has
3 default keys to enter console, and each one of the three should work. For
backquote, I actually have no key that generates it directly - I have to
press a key twice with my keyboard layout, so this is not necessarily a
Nexuiz bug. But tilde clearly doesn't work. I think this is because my
keyboard layout requires a key combination to generate a tilde. I'm unable to
set any action to tilde, it just sets to "ALT" (since I need to press Alt+;).
So, nexuiz should either support key combinations, or not use characters
which can be generated by key combinations by default.
If you agree, please reopen this report.

sorry, i really see no strong reason to change anything about this
issue. shift+esc works on every keyboard layout without any differences
among different layouts and this keyboard shortcut can be found in the
documentation of nexuiz and also in README.Debian. if the undocumented
keys work for a limited range of users, those are for the lucky ones,
but these keys still are neither documented nor suggested to be used by
me, nor by upstream! and if a user doesn't like the shift+esc keys, it's
still possible to change them to personal preferences.

Yes, but nexuiz itself (the program) suggests to use these. And since it
doesn't suggest Shift+Esc, that's what people are most likely to try.
Shift+Esc seems to be hardcoded, but AFAICS hardcoded keys
aren't "documented" in nexuiz. Do you agree?

i'm sorry, i didn't get it, that you mean, that the (broken) keys still
appear in the settings dialog window of the game! yes, you are
absolutely right: that's too confusing to present the user something,
that's not known to work! i fully agree with you and will reopen this
bug!
i'm sorry, that it took me so long to understand the problem :/
