Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3 is now
the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on i386 yet).
Feel free to downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built
on i386, and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
gcc 4.2).

A list of current common problems and possible solutions is available at
http://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/FTBFS . You're welcome to contribute!

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.

Subject: Build maxima with sbcl for lenny?
Date: Sat, 05 Jul 2008 20:03:23 +0200
Package: maxima
Version: 5.13.0-3.1
Followup-For: Bug #474909

Maybe this is the same bug as #467474? At least it looks the same to me.

Although the build failure happens in a slightly different place for me, I still
have a FTBFS with gcl 2.6.7-36.1 and gcc 4.3.1-2. It now seems to
die the first time gcl is called

    gcl -batch -eval '(progn (load "../lisp-utils/defsystem.lisp")
    (compiler::emit-fn t) (funcall (intern (symbol-name
    :operate-on-system) :mk) "maxima" :compile :verbose t)
    (compiler::make-all-proclaims "*/*.fn" "*/*/*/*.fn"))' && \ gcl
    -batch -eval '(progn (load "../lisp-utils/defsystem.lisp")
    (funcall (intern (symbol-name :operate-on-system) :mk) "maxima"
    :load :verbose t) (when (fboundp (quote si::sgc-on))(si::sgc-on
    t)) (si:save-system "binary-gcl/maxima"))'

    Warning: REQUIRE is being redefined.
    /bin/sh: line 1: 15042
    Segmentation fault
    gcl -batch -eval '(progn (load
    "../lisp-utils/defsystem.lisp") (compiler::emit-fn t) (funcall
    (intern (symbol-name :operate-on-system) :mk) "maxima" :compile
    :verbose t) (compiler::make-all-proclaims "*/*.fn" "*/*/*/*.fn"))'

On the other hand, if I specify ./configure --enable-sbcl && make &&
make check it seems to be OK.

What do people think about building maxima with sbcl for lenny? I
read that it is supposed be not as fast, but I can't compare since
with sbcl the testsuite takes about 40s (Thinkpad X61s, core 2 duo
1.6GHz), while the gcl version (binary package from sid) crashes with
seg fault half way through.

I have the feeling Camm (the maintainer) is really busy right now, but
if you could OK the idea of building maxima with sbcl for lenny, that
would be great.

Personally I think that having a slow maxima package is better than no
package at all, but I have no expertise in gcl.

There are open bugs keeping the sid version of gcl out of lenny. Is it
possible that the bug that is keeping gcl out of testing is also
causing the maxima build failures?

Subject: potential NMU of maxima using sbcl
Date: Fri, 25 Jul 2008 12:28:23 -0300
Hi Camm;

I prepared an NMU for maxima using sbcl as a lisp.

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/maxima

the main disadvantage seems to be a versioned dependency on sbcl.

Would this be OK for you?

If you have no more time for maxima packaging, I could adopt it. I
don't claim to understand everything in the packaging on a deep level,
but I'm learning.

David

Greetings, and thank you so much for your assistance! I would love
your input on and help with the package.

I'm uploading a -15 now, which has quite a lot of cleanup work
remaining, as a test of the build status on the various platforms. I
would like to stick with gcl due to its history, portability, license,
closeness to gcc, and uniformity with other heavy duty lisp programs.

Please feel free to comment on the large diff, lintian problems,
source build warnings, etc. I'd really appreciate help making the
package as simple and streamlined as possible.

Take care,

Sure, sounds reasonable. I just wasn't ready to step up to maintain GCL.

OK, by default I will send patches to BTS. Let me know if/when you are
interested in some kind of shared version control setup.

Hi;

I just verified in an up-to-date pbuilder the latest maxima FTBFS on
i386. gcl is 2.6.7-36.1. I mention this because it won't show up
on the buildds

Here are the last few lines of the log file.

I will try that.

Well, it looked to me like it was using the i386 .deb that you uploaded.
Am I wrong?

I had to apply the patch from Peter de Wachter (#487435) to get gcl to build
on my box (I guess it is a kernel 2.6.25 issue). With this patched version of
gcl 2.6.7-36.1, I get farther into the build, but it fails compiling
numerical/slatec/zexp.o

full build log is at

Intially on debian kernel 2.6.25-7, configuration of gcl 2.6.7-38
failed (log on http://www.cs.unb.ca/~bremner/logs/2008/07/31/gcl.log
but I think there is nothing too surprising there) with the message

checking for ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE constant... yes, 40000
checking for personality(ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE) support... no
checking that sbrk is (now) non-random... no
Cannot build with randomized sbrk. Your options:
 - upgrade to a kernel/libc that knows about personality(ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE)
 - recompile your kernel with CONFIG_COMPAT_BRK (if it has that option)
 - run sysctl kernel.randomize_va_space=0 before using gcl

Following this advice, I ran

 sysctl kernel.randomize_va_space=0

After this I was able to successfuly build gcl and then use that gcl to
build maxima-5.15.0-2. This build of maxima seems OK; run_testsuite()
produces no unexpected errors.

Greetings, and thanks for the feedback! WOuld you mind excerpting the
C routines corresponding to the two 'no' results below, compile with
-g and run under gdb to let me know where they fail? I am surprised
at the failure.

Specifically, what is wrong with

void gprof_cleanup() {};
int main(int argc,char *argv[],char *envp[]) {
#include "h/unrandomize.h"
return 0;}

when compiled and run in the topdir of gcl source?

Separately, I've found that Debian is not passing personality changes
across execve, unlike Fedora. Sure wish someone could explain the
variants out there to me.

Take care,

I'm unversioned-closing this bug because we successfully binNMUed maxima
in testing some months after this bug was opened. IIRC, and the
changelog seems to agree, this bug was caused by older versions of gcl.

Please let me know if you feel this to be in error.

Cheers,

Dear Camm,

Please find attached a patch against the Lenny version to fix the two
bugs mentioned. Please consider uploading this to
testing-proposed-updates, so that it can be included in Lenny.

More testing of the patches may be advisable, though I am unsure.

Thanks.

Kumar

thanks

In hindsight, these don't seem to be bugs any more. So I removed the
patch tags. Sorry for the noise, and hope to see maxima in Lenny.

Kumar

Apparently bugs can't be unversioned-closed if they're already fixed in
one version. Hence, I'm removing the "fixed" version, to mark it as not
present in testing as well.

Cheers,
