Subject: kernel-img.conf.5.gz belongs in this package
Date: Wed, 02 Apr 2008 08:40:35 +0800
Package: linux-image-2.6-686
Version: 2.6.24+13

$ cat /etc/kernel-img.conf
# Kernel Image management overrides
# See kernel-img.conf(5) for details
$ man kernel-img.conf
No manual entry for kernel-img.conf

That's because it's in the WRONG PACKAGE: kernel-package.

# apt-get install kernel-package
0 upgraded, 11 newly installed
Need to get 8705kB of archives.

Eight Megabytes just to have the missing man page? Bad. Please include
it with your linux-image-*, (instead of, or perhaps in addition to
somehow, kernel-package, which basic users do not use.)

And to which package belongs the file /etc/kernel-img.conf? To none.

Not possible.

Then don't say

m> And to which package belongs the file /etc/kernel-img.conf? To none.

Then don't provide it.

Then don't make kernel-img.conf.5.gz belong to any package either.

I have no way of detecting all the packages that use kernel-img.conf
because of this Debian hidden file mechanism:
m> And to which package belongs the file /etc/kernel-img.conf? To none.
All I know is of all those packages, some are more optional than
others, and the kernel-img.conf.5.gz man page should be in the least
optional of all.

All I know is many users have never installed or used kernel-package,
but still must deal with kernel-img.conf, and have no documentation.
