Subject: iceweasel: Forgets standard application for application/pdf mime types
Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2008 13:08:04 +0200
Package: iceweasel
Version: 2.0.0.13-1
Severity: normal

When opening a PDF file, iceweasel offers to open it with
/usr/bin/xpdf -- but only for the first time. Opening another link to a
PDF file suggests to save the file to disk and the standard application
to open it is "forgotten" until iceweasel is restarted.

This behavior seems to be quite new, but iceape (1.1.9-1) exhibits the
same bug.

I can confirm this bug - I've done a bit more testing though and have
the following results:

Firstly, I can only replicate this on iceweasel/firefox + KDE (or at
least, if there are kde mimetype handling packages installed) - it
does not happen on a clean gnome install. Therefore the bug is likely
with IW's handling of mimetypes defined in/by KDE (which seems to be
particularly complex, with multiple definitions in multiple locations)

It is not just pdf file/mimetypes that are forgotten, I can confirm on
all common document formats, (with openoffice.org installed):
OpenDocument: odt, ods, odp
MSOffice: doc, xls, ppt, docx, xlsx, pptx
OpenOffice: sxc, sxw, sxd

There are some sample files at: http://silenceisdefeat.org/~ajd4096/ex2/

To replicate, click on a filetype (.xls in my experience is the
quickest to show the issue), it should get the correct mimetype, and
indicate a default application as per:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/clearyss/xls1.png

Choose [ok] so that openoffice starts, then close openoffice

Repeat the above (on the same filetype) until the mimetype is
"forgotten" in the open/save dialog as per:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/clearyss/xls2.png

I find that sometimes all mimetypes are forgotten, sometimes only a
selection are forgotten.

Other environments/testing info:
Confirmed: Debian sid + kde 3.5.9 + iceweasel 2.0.0.14
Confirmed: Debian sid + kde 3.5.9 + fluxbox (running fluxbox as the
WM) + iceweasel 2.0.0.14
Confirmed: Debian sid + kde 3.5.9 + Firefox 2.0.0.14 binary from mozilla.org
Confirmed: Ubuntu Hardy + kde 3.5.9 + Firefox 2.0.0.6 (from gutsy repo)

Cannot Replicate: clean Debian sid + Gnome 2.20.2.2 + iceweasel 2.0.0.14
Cannot Replicate: Windows XP + firefox 2.0.0.14
Cannot Replicate: Mac OS X v10.5 + firefox 2.0.0.14

---------------------------------------------

Other notes: it is budget time here, a lot of users are receiving a
lot of attachments, it's causing quite a bit of disruption. If more
information is required, I am at your immediate disposal ;)

I would also be interested to know if there are other paths to
resolution that you would recommend I take in parallel to this one.

Try installing iceweasel-gnome-support on those hosts.

Hi Mike,
Installed iceweasel-gnome-support, but the bug is still appearing
(tested on 3x hosts, iw 2.0.0.14 + kde 3.5.9, debian sid) .
Going by feel only, it seems to have reduced the speed with which it
will appear, but it still happens eventually.

Bernie

Hi Mike,
Installed iceweasel-gnome-support, but the bug is still appearing
(tested on 3x hosts, iw 2.0.0.14 + kde 3.5.9, debian sid) .
On one host, cancelling the file save dialog then reclicking the file
to save reverts to correct behaviour - as though there is a timeout
period for the broken-ness. However this was not consistent across all
hosts tested.

Further patterns I've noticed:
I was premature saying OpenOffice 1.x formats were susceptible - they
are the only ones (out of the list on the link in my orig post) not
failing within a reasonable period - <30 clicks.

Regards,
Bernie

Can you try again, running the following:
NSPR_LOG_MODULES=HelperAppService:5 iceweasel

Then, please send the resulting logs here.

Thanks

Attached - the process I went through was clicking a .xls link and
opening, then reclicking the .xls link which reproduced the bug.

As a side note - we have found a workaround for it, by manually
defining the /usr/bin/ooffice as the default application for msexcel
and msword extensions, instead of /usr/bin/soffice which is the
initial default.

They are not the same binaries which is what I initially thought -
indicating (to me at least) the bug may be in the openoffice.org
package (also?)

~$ ls -l /usr/bin/*office*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 52 2008-05-02 09:59 /usr/bin/ooffice
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  7 2008-05-26 10:26 /usr/bin/openoffice -> ooffice
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 2008-05-26 10:26 /usr/bin/soffice ->
../lib/openoffice/program/soffice

~$ ls -l /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9362 2008-05-02 10:01 /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice

There seem to be some mailcap handling glitches in iceweasel. I won't
have time to track this down in the near future, and considering we're
more likely to ship iceweasel 3.0 rather than 2.0 in lenny, it would be
better if you could tell whether iceweasel 3.0~rc1-1 currently in
experimental is affected too. (Be careful to upgrade the libmozjs1d
package first). Note that if your computers are not x86_64 based,
necessary packages are not built yet, so you would have to wait a few
days.

Anyways, since you have a workaround, waiting is not an issue ;)

That's fair enough - I gave it a test on an x86_64 build, 3.0~rc1-1
and cannot replicate the issue.
Something I noted was that all those document formats were pointing to
'soffice' as the default application, instead of "OpenOffice
Writer|Spreadsheet|etc" which was occurring in iw 2.0. Considering the
soffice binary was implicated in the initial issue I thought that was
interesting. It's definitely a regression in the naming scheme, but
ultimately I'd prefer it working and named inconveniently than not
working and easy to read ;-)

Thanks again for the assistance -

Bernie

Thanks for trying with the 3.0 rc and validating it's not a problem with
it. Marking the bug as fixed there.

thanks

Unfortunately, I can not confirm that this bug is fixed. Opening the
first PDF file iceweasel suggests xpdf as the standard application, but
the second time it wants to use konqueror instead. ?!&#$@

Do you have xulrunner-1.9-gnome-support installed ? If not, can you try
applying the patch from https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=325195
to the application.js file that sits in /usr/lib/iceweasel/chrome/browser.jar ?

Alternatively, try the instructions in

No, and I don't really want any Gnome stuff on my system. But maybe I
have to bite the bullet, since
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=409192 is really painful.

Did that, but it does not help. :-(

As you can see there, I'm on it and the patch will be integrated in next
upload ;)

Okay, according to your log, there seem to be something fishy with mailcap
tests. Seeing the xulrunner code, I really don't understand what can be
happening...
Could you run:
strace -f -eexecve,exit_group -o/some/file iceweasel
and send the /some/file here ? This might be enlightening.

Thanks

In the meantime, I installed iceweasel-gnome-support to get the
Edit->Preferences->Applications dialog working and set my small script
to run Gnus as the handler for mailto links.

So... I was able to reproduce the bug, and find why it happens...
unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea how to fix this.

Let's see what upstream has to say about it.

I'm a big liar, I somehow found something. The attached patch seems to
solve the issue for me. Can you give that a try? (You will need to
either apply that to older iceweasel (2.x) or xulrunner-1.9)

Cheers,

Mike

Applied to xulrunner, and indeed it seems to solve the problem. :-)

Changes:
 xulrunner (1.9~rc2-4) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * xulrunner/stub/nsXULStub.cpp: Refactored the previous change allowing
     xulrunner-stub to be symlinked, so that it works properly in more cases.
   * xpcom/io/nsAppFileLocationProvider.cpp: Add /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins as
     global location to find plugins.
   * configure, configure.in: Force to not use -fshort-wchar. Closes: #485876.
   * uriloader/exthandler/unix/nsOSHelperAppService.cpp: Avoid thread wait
     catching system() child process termination, which can make mailcap
     entries with tests ignored (since tests end up failing). Closes: #473557.
   * uriloader/exthandler/unix/nsOSHelperAppService.cpp: Ignore mailcap entries
     with "needsterminal". Closes: #467612.
   * toolkit/content/about.dtd, toolkit/content/about.xhtml,
     toolkit/content/jar.mn, toolkit/locales/en-US/chrome/global/about.dtd:
     Avoid the about: page to be broken when l10n chrome doesn't include the
     debian specific strings, which will stay in english.
   * modules/libpref/src/prefapi.*, modules/libpref/src/prefread.*: Allow .js
     preference files to set locked prefs with lockPref(). Closes: #469020.
   * toolkit/xre/nsXREDirProvider.cpp: Add another preferences directory for
     applications: preferences/syspref. It was existing in previous versions of
     iceweasel as a symlink to /etc/iceweasel/pref. This has the side effect to
     make these preferences there work again, and to disable the "set as
     default browser" dialog. Closes: #485662.
   * xulrunner/app/Makefile.in: Don't link xulrunner-bin against libjemalloc
     anymore.
   * build/unix/run-mozilla.sh, xulrunner/stub/Makefile.in,
     xulrunner/stub/nsXULStub.cpp: Load libjemalloc through LD_PRELOAD in both
     stub (which happened to not be linked against libjemalloc, so iceweasel
     should get a performance boost) and xulrunner-bin. This can be disabled
     by setting the MOZILLA_NO_JEMALLOC environment variable to some value.
   * debian/xulrunner-1.9.install: Don't install libjemalloc by default.
     Closes: #486663.
   * debian/rules: Refactored tests to use MOZILLA_NO_JEMALLOC, and install
     libjemalloc if the corresponding test succeeded.

Can you also try with this new patch[1], the old one had an issue that it
would always add the first matching entry, even if the test worked.

Unfortunately, I built the previous version with pdebuild which means
that I have to start all over again and torture my old Athlon XP 2400+
for another two hours. Will probably do that during the EM quarterfinal
later this evening.

Meanwhile I merged the new patch to the -4 version of xulrunner that is
currently in incoming and I will build that version.

Sven
