A separate issue when building on amd64 is that BUILDS variable is initialised
with the empty string, which makes some targets depend on unexistant stamps:

Hmm, yeah, I messed around a bit with debian/rules in 0.9.57-1 so I 
could try out changes to the packaging faster. At the end, I was in a 
bit of a hurry to get the package done and uploaded so I could sleep... 
 apparently I *really* needed that sleep. Oh well.
