Package: libpango1.0-0
Version: 1.20.0-1
Severity: important
I'm seeing permanent crashes of iceweasel recently, and disabling pango
with
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 iceweasel
stops that completely, so I am filing a bug against pango.
It could be related to cairo. I got the following stderr output on a crash:
firefox-bin: /home/dajobe/dev/debian/cairo/cairo-1.4.14/src/cairo-ft-font.c:574: _cairo_ft_unscaled_font_unlock_face: Assertion `unscaled->lock_count > 0' failed.
All the best

Looks like cairo indeed

Message #17 received at 471642@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
I have been seeing this bug for a while in sid: iceweasel crashes
frequently, and setting MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO fixes it. I took a closer
look at the crash reports (see below), and saw pango-graphite in a
number of them. It doesn't always appear in the stack trace, but it's
there frequently. I uninstalled pango-graphite, and the problem has
not recurred for me since: even with pango enabled, iceweasel is
stable.
Could the original submitter confirm whether pango-graphite is
installed; and, if so, whether removing it fixes the problem? If it
does, perhaps the bug should be reassigned to that package.
The relevant portion of one backtrace (again, graphite didn't show up
every time):

I can confirm that. Further problems fixed by uninstallation of
pango-graphite are:
- crashes of mozilla
- wrong display of digits (mixture of sans serif and serif fonts)

Yes, done.

Hi,
pango-graphite "owns" a critical bug, #471642 and dupes, since April
with no visible maintainer activity.
As it's not been released with stable before and has no reverse
dependencies, it appears to be an ideal removal candidate.
Kind regards
T.

Yes, I made a mess of that not updating the bug. I've checked with
upstream and they have some ideas to try (incidentally it is a firefox
bug that leads down the bad code path, but still a bug that needs
fixed in graphite/pango-graphite). If I can get a fixed package
uploaded in the next day or three would it get back in? If so I'll let
you know tomorrow if that will happen or not.
Regards,
Daniel

I don't get a say in this, but more then 7 months as response time is
not an advertisement that it's well-maintained. One month can happen[1],
two months probably as well, but seven? We would not want to have bugs
of the
the-most-commonly-used-browser-is-completely-unusable-if-I-made-the-mistake-to-install-your-package-type
in a stable release.

I've prepared an NMU for pango-graphite (versioned as 0.9.3-0.1) by
packaging a new upstream version available at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/silgraphite/files/
This fixes a release critical bug and Carsten Hey sponsored it to
DELAYED/5 yesterday.
I have confirmed the bug and that this new version fixes this bug on current
ubuntu dev (10.10) and Carsten has done likewise for sid
