Subject: audacious: sometimes refuses to play MP3 stream (with errors or segfault)

Package: audacious
Version: 1.4.6-2
Severity: important

Hi again!

audacious refuses to play an MP3 streaming Internet radio (which usually
works fine and works fine *at the same time* on another box with another
audio player).

This issue was mentioned by me in bug #468923, but it's not the same
(even though it may be related, I don't know).

I start audacious from an xterm in order to see stderr messages.
When I press the play button nothing happens, except for the following
error messages:

ERROR: neon: neon.c:986 (neon_aud_vfs_fread_impl): Buffer still underrun, fatal.
ERROR: neon: neon.c:986 (neon_aud_vfs_fread_impl): Buffer still underrun, fatal.
ERROR: neon: neon.c:1077 (neon_aud_vfs_getc_impl): Could not getc()!
ERROR: neon: neon.c:986 (neon_aud_vfs_fread_impl): Buffer still underrun, fatal.
  MADPlug-Message: aud_vfs_fread failed @3 http://205.188.215.225:8010
ERROR: neon: neon.c:986 (neon_aud_vfs_fread_impl): Buffer still underrun, fatal.
ERROR: neon: neon.c:986 (neon_aud_vfs_fread_impl): Buffer still underrun, fatal.

So I repress the play button, and I get the same error messages again.
I kill audacious and restart it.
I press the play button and I get a segmentation fault.

At that point, my configuration is *lost*.
If I start audacious again, I get a default configuration:

  $ ls -l ~/.config/audacious/
  total 88
  -rw-r----- 1 frx frx 10519 2008-03-02 12:53 accels
  -rw-rw---- 1 frx frx 635 2008-01-20 17:42 amidi-plug.conf
  -rw-rw---- 1 frx frx 2761 2008-03-02 12:53 config
  -rw-rw---- 1 frx frx 55288 2008-03-02 12:53 log

  -rw-rw---- 1 frx frx 2942 2008-03-02 12:53 playlist.xspf

Please note that my normal ~/.config/audacious/config file is
5313 byte long, not 2761 byte long!
I have to restore my config file from a backup to get back my
customization...

What's wrong?

P.S.: I've experienced this bug with previous versions of audacious,
as well (at least with version 1.4.5-1). But today, after upgrading
to version 1.4.6-2 (which recently migrated to testing), it seems
to happen always!

and then audacious aborted.
My configuration was lost, again! :-(

BTW, it seems that audacious is still able to play local files.
The bug is experienced only when attempting to play network streams.

Hi,

Your constant crashing issue is also an issue with libmcs (infact, the
same bug which causes the 2.3GiB config file -- bug #468923). As such,
it will be fixed in the next couple of days.

Should these two bugs (#468923 and #468926) be reassigned to package

Hello,

I'm closing this bug as I just uploaded mcs 0.7.0 (which fix this issue)
to debian unstable.

Best regards, Adam.

Well, I'm glad to hear that mcs 0.7.0 is supposed to fix the two issues
(even though I haven't yet had the opportunity to check whether it
actually does).

Anyway, is closing the bugs with a -done command the most proper action?
It completely bypasses BTS version tracking, doesn't it?

What I recently proposed was reassigning the two bugs to package
libmcs1 version 0.6.0-1. At that point the bugs would have been closed
with proper version information by a "Closes" directive in the
changelog (or else by a -done command with explicit version
information).
Or am I completely off-track?

I upgraded to libmcs1 version 0.7.0-1 from unstable, and I can confirm
that audacious doesn't crash so often any longer and that I haven't seen
any more neon errors.

On the other hand, in a couple of days of usage, I got *one* segfault.
The relevant info in /var/log/kern.log was:

  audacious[3357]: segfault at 0 rip 2aaabaa92824 rsp 7fff2ea1f2e0 error 4

I don't know if this means that the bug should be reopened: maybe this
segfault is related to the reported crashes, maybe it's not.

Steps to reproduce: it's hard to tell.
As I said, I only experienced this segfault once.
What I did to get the segfault was:
  0. start audacious
  1. press play and listen to an Internet radio stream for quite some
time (about half afternoon or so)
  2. press stop and leave audacious silent for quite some time (the
rest of the afternoon, dinner time and more)
  3. press play: boom! segfault!

Mmmmh, I got another segfault in a similar way (this time, the
audacious was kept silent only from 19:40 to 20:40):

Relevant info in /var/log/kern.log:

  audacious[7943]: segfault at 0 rip 2b7697728020 rsp 42803ec8 error 4

I still experience the bug from time to time.
Last time I got a segfault, I saw the following info
in /var/log/kern.log:

  audacious[7772]: segfault at 0 rip 2adf56621020 rsp 42803ec8 error 4

Steps that sometimes (but not always) reproduce the bug:
  0. start audacious
  1. press play and listen to an Internet radio stream for quite some
     time (variable)
  2. press stop and leave audacious silent for some time (variable, last
time I got a segfault it was a matter of one or two hundred
seconds; sometimes I left audacious silent for longer times)
  3. press play: boom! segfault!

Additional information.

If I start audacious from an xterm in order to see stderr messages, I
see the following messages when I press stop and play buttons:

  id3_file_vfsopen: file failed
  id3_file_vfsopen: file failed
ERROR: neon: neon.c:881 (neon_aud_vfs_fread_impl): Buffer underrun, trying rebuffering
  id3_file_vfsopen: file failed

ERROR: neon: neon.c:881 (neon_aud_vfs_fread_impl): Buffer underrun, trying rebuffering
  id3_file_vfsopen: file failed

I don't know whether these data may help in investigating on my
segfaults...

notfixed 468926 1.5.1-1
thanks

Hi!

Unfortunately, this bug does not seem to be really fixed by
audacious-plugins/1.5.1-1.

  $ dpkg -l | grep audacious | cut -b 1-66
  ii audacious 1.5.1-4
  ii audacious-plugins 1.5.1-2
  ii audacious-plugins-extra 1.5.1-2
  ii libaudclient1 1.5.1-4
  ii libaudid3tag1 1.5.1-4

With these packages installed, I still experience audacious segfaults
from time to time (more often than I'd like to see...).

As described in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=468926&archived=False&mbox=no#50
here are the steps that sometimes (but not always) reproduce the bug:
  0. start audacious
  1. press play and listen to an Internet radio stream for quite some
     time (variable)
  2. press stop and leave audacious silent for some time (variable,
could be a matter of one or two hundred seconds; sometimes longer
     times)
  3. press play: boom! segfault!

I still experience audacious segfaults every now and then, when
listening to Internet MP3 streams.

I noticed that it happens above all when there are some partial network
problems (network congestion that causes network packets to arrive
irregularly, so that the buffer gets emptied out).

Sometimes, after a segfault, I also find out that the audacious
configuration file (~/.config/audacious/config) was messed up with, and
I have to restore it from a backup...

As I said, I experience segfaults especially when I have partial network
problems. For instance:

  $ audacious
  amidi-plug(amidi-plug.c:amidiplug_init:97): init, read configuration
  amidi-plug(i_backend.c:i_backend_load:107): loading backend '/usr/lib/audacious/Input/amidi-plug/ap-alsa.so'
amidi-plug(i_backend.c:i_backend_load:145): backend /usr/lib/audacious/Input/amidi-plug/ap-alsa.so (name 'alsa') successfully loaded

Then, I press play in order to listen to an Internet MP3 streaming radio.
After a little while (and too few data from the network):

ERROR: neon: neon.c:746 (fill_buffer): <0x9042608> Error while reading from the network
ERROR: neon: neon.c:777 (fill_buffer_limit): <0x9042608> Error while filling buffer
ERROR: neon: neon.c:1001 (neon_aud_vfs_fread_impl): <0x9042608> Error while reading from the network
  id3_file_vfsopen: file failed
  Segmentation fault

The relevant line in /var/log/kern.log says:

  audacious[4636]: segfault at 24 ip b57d9b5d sp b4122c80 error 4 in libneon-gnutls.so.27.1.2[b57c9000+1f000]

I hope this may help in pinpointing the bug.

Hi Francesco,

In the last few days, William has fixed a couple of bugs related to
crashing on network problems and specifically MP3 streams. Would it be
possible for you to check out the current upstream version and see if
the problem is fixed for you?

John Lindgren

I will check the new version as soon as it is available from
Debian unstable.
Please remind me to do so, when this new version enters sid.
Thanks in advance.

Bye.

It will have to go through NEW first. I can throw up 2.0-beta1 official
builds on a private repository if you want to test sooner.

I am not 100 % sure I will the find the time to test beta versions from
custom repositories, so maybe you shouldn't risk wasting your time in
setting up a private repository just for me...

Perhaps this helps tracking down the problem.

This seems to be a hint...

#define NE_CONNECT (5) /* Could not connect to server */

Try with a vanilla config if you can. Maybe proxy settings were
converted incorrectly.

Still try with a blank config if you can. NE_CONNECT means Connection
refused, which does not indicate an Audacious bug. So I need to see if
its trying to connect to the right place or not.

How to make sure that I have a "blank config". There is no such
file or directory ~/.audacious

Kind regards

This might be - I just never had any need to fiddle around
with the configs ...

I attached the contend of the freshly created config dir
as well as the terminal output.

Hope this helps

Can you try stracing it? It may not be helpful due to the multithreaded
nature of Audacious. Error 5 usually means "connection refused",
though... so I am still not convinced this is an audacious bug, and
instead some bug in either neon or your local network policy.

Thank you.

This appears to be a problem with your DNS. The DNS resolution appears
to fail. Can you try manually resolving the IP of the server and
connecting to it?

At any rate, I believe this is a bug in neon.

I also have this problem. It's almost certainly a Neon problem. I think
it started when I updated Lenny to Squeeze.

$ audacious2 http://ic.adagio.fm:8000/afm64k.ogg
ERROR: neon: neon.c:619 (open_request): <0x9e55780> Could not open URL: 5 (0)

Xine, running on the same machine, plays the stream without any
complaints.

Downgrade libneon27 from 0.28.4-1 (Squeeze) to 0.28.2-6.1 (Lenny) and
the problem disappears.

Date: Fri, 24 Jul 2009 15:52:45 -0400
Package: libneon27
Version: 0.28.4-1
Severity: important

This problem was originally reported against Audacious media player,
which I am a developer of. The version of libneon currently in Squeeze,
0.28.4-1, completely fails to read an Ogg Vorbis stream which the Lenny
version, 0.28.2-6.1, reads without any problem.

With 0.28.4-1 (and upstream Audacious as of today):

        $ audacious2 http://ic.adagio.fm:8000/afm64k.ogg
        ERROR: neon: neon.c:619 (open_request): <0x9e55780> Could not open URL: 5 (0)

[Audacious starts immediately but does not play.]

With 0.28.2-6.1 (and the same Audacious):

        $ audacious2 http://ic.adagio.fm:8000/afm64k.ogg

[Audacious takes a few seconds to start (connecting? buffering?) but
plays the stream without errors.]

If it's helpful, the source code of Audacious's neon plugin (the neon.c
referred to in the error messages) is online at:

Heh! I don't know when I will be able to test a new audacious version
from unstable: I am and will shortly be traveling for vacation and work
with a really slow and/or no Internet connectivity... :-(

If I understand correctly from the recent developments of the bug log,
you are able to reproduce the bug, but only with OGG Vorbis streams...
That's strange, since I mainly experience it with MP3 streams (probably
because I mainly listen to radios that, unfortunately, offer MP3
streams, but not OGG ones...).

Another strange fact is that you claim the bug was introduced in
libneon27 after the lenny release: it's strange, because I originally
reported the bug way before lenny release.

Are you sure that we are talking about the same bug?

Andreas Tille unwittingly caused some confusion by reporting a second
and unrelated bug on the same page as yours (message #113). That bug is
the one which I was able to reproduce with a Vorbis stream (message
#153) and forwarded to libneon27 (message #163).

The original bug which you reported, if I understand correctly, was that
Audacious would segfault on a poor network connection. At one time, I
also experienced segfaults related to network troubles. I reported this
problem upstream, and William Pitcock made some changes that fixed it.

        http://redmine.atheme.org/issues/show/57

I asked you (message #93) to see if those changes also fixed the
segfaults which you experienced. You did not want to try the upstream
version (message #98); well, now those changes have made it into Debian
Sid, in Audacious version 2.1-1.

Enjoy your vacation, and when you get back, please try the new version.
Thank you.

I am testing audacious/2.1-1: I haven't yet seen any segfault related to
network troubles.
I also tried to bring the network interface down (with ifdown) while
listening to an Internet radio MP3 stream: of course audacious stopped
playing the stream as soon as the buffer was emptied, but no
segmentation fault happened.

However, I experienced another segfault, as described in
http://bugs.debian.org/471394#27
I don't know if that is due to the same bug, though: that segfault
seems to be related to libresolv, rather than to libneon...

I am really puzzled.

Well, it's not quite fixed: as stated in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=187;bug=468926
I still experience segfaults, from time to time (especially when I
stress-test audacious).

Sorry, I thought you were subscribed to Debian Audacious Packagers

You can't just say "it crashes now and then" and expect the problem to
be fixed. You need to provide a backtrace and specific steps to
reproduce.

OK, fair enough.
I've been testing audacious for a while, after installing debug symbols:

  # aptitude install audacious-dbg

by using the following script:

  $ cat debug-audacious.sh
  #!/bin/sh

  if ! diff ~/tmp/config-audacious-config_SAVE ~/.config/audacious/config
  then
      cp -ai ~/tmp/config-audacious-config_SAVE ~/.config/audacious/config
  fi
  rm -f gdb.txt

  gdb audacious2 << EOF
  set pagination 0
  thread apply all bt full
  set logging on
  run
  bt
  quit
  EOF

I was hoping to see a segfault and provide a backtrace.
I have seen no segfaults...
Of course, Murphy's law implies that I will see one, as soon as I
remove audacious-dbg and stop running it under gdb! ;-)

I think this bug should be closed for the time being.

Should I experience other segfaults, I will try to reproduce them under
gdb and I will open a separate bug report with a backtrace.

Bye and thanks.
