AFAICS from the manpage, it is not possible to have several different
pristine-tar branches when using pristine-tar commit and checkout. It
would be nice if that were possible.

As I answered the other request for this (in #465231):

I was happy to hardcode the branch name, because there's a big
interoperability benefit if you can point pristine-tar at any git repo
that uses it and extract tarballs with no configuration needed.

It should be possible to have pristine-tar use the pristine-tar branch
by default, of use something else depending on configuration and/or
command line arguments.
