Subject: audacious: Truncates streamed track titles containing apostrophe
Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 19:23:53 +0100
Package: audacious
Version: 1.4.5-1
Severity: minor

When listening to some internet radio station stream in MP3 format, I saw a
track title "John O", when the actual tag read:
"John O'Callaghan - Subculture 017" on their web based playlist and on their
forums. I suspect the apostrophe triggered this. Refreshing the playlist
and reconnecting to the stream did not change anything. Creating a local file
with an apostrophe in the ID3 tag (and filename) did however not trigger this
behaviour. I believe this is a bug in audacious. If it were a problem in the
stream, it would probably have caused people to "complain" about this in the
radio forums (apparently it is a monthly show). Audacious should not cut track
titles after encountering an apostrophe.

Package: audacious
Version: 1.4.5-1
Followup-For: Bug #465299

Hi,
I confirm that the bug is present: I experience it regularly when
listening to (MP3) streaming radios.

Every song title containing an apostrophe gets truncated just before
the apostrophe (e.g.: _You're Better Off Dead_ by Children Of Bodom
is wrongly displayed as _You_).
I'm quite sure that audacious is to blame for this misbehavior, since
other audio players display the same title correctly (I've tried with
XMMS on a sarge box).

I can also confirm that local files don't seem to trigger the bug
(at least, not local Ogg Vorbis audio files with apostrophes in their
tags).

BTW, I don't quite agree with the bug's severity: since this bug *does*
affect the package usefulness, I think severity minor is not enough.
I think that normal would be the most appropriate severity.

This bug is still present and still annoying.
Setting severity as previously explained, since nobody seems to object...

Just some additional info: I noticed that the bug only shows up with
MP3 streaming radios.
It does not affect OGG streaming radios or local files.

Good news: it seems that this bug no longer affects audacious in
version 2.1-1.

I've just listened to:

Darkane - The Fear Of One's Self
Dead To Fall - You've Already Died
White Zombie - Thunder Kiss '65

on an MP3 streaming radio.

Audacious displayed artists and titles correctly.

At least, titles were displayed correctly in the task list item; the
(rolled up) playlist window fails to be updated, as already reported in
bug #540764...

As a consequence, I think this bug report (#465299) may be closed as
fixed in audacious/2.1-1.

I just tuned in to a couple of streams playing tracks with apostrophes
in their titles and it seems the problem does not occur any longer.

Thanks.

Wonderful. I can't track the fix down to a particular change, but a lot
of code has been rewritten between 1.4 and 2.1, and I didn't see
anything suspicious in the current code.
