Package: k3b
Version: 1.0.4-3
Severity: normal

When trying to burn an audio CD based on 24bit sampled flac files, k3b complains
about 'Unable to handle the following files due to an unsupported format' without
mentioning the problem is the sample size, not the flac format itself. See
http://www.aavepyora.net/musa/bizarroworld.html for some example files.

It looks like this problem may be specific to the version in Debian...

the files from that website work perfectly in k3b. Could it be that the flac plugin is not installed?

The version of K3b in Ubuntu Gutsy is also affected.

Subject: possible solution for 24-bit FLAC problem
Date: Sun, 5 Oct 2008 05:12:25 -0600
It appears that Debian's K3b can handle 24-bit FLAC files if the
libsndfile plugin is included in the build.

I have tested this by:
1. installing libsndfile1-dev (a missing Build-Depends?)
2. adding
  debian/tmp/usr/lib/kde3/libk3blibsndfiledecoder*
  to
  src/k3b-1.0.5/debian/libk3b3-extracodecs.install
3. building then running K3b
4. adding 24-bit FLAC files to an audio CD project, where they appear as
  Type: "FLAC (FLAC Lossless Audio Codec)"
  [16-bit FLAC files appear as Type: "FLAC"]
5. disabling the libsndfile plugin and confirming that 24-bit FLAC files
  are no longer supported
6. burning an audio CD from 24-bit FLAC files then listening to the
  result, which sounded good
7. and just to make sure:
$ strings /usr/lib/libsndfile.so.1.0.17 | grep "FLAC (FLAC"
FLAC (FLAC Lossless Audio Codec)
$

NOTE...
$ ldd /usr/lib/libsndfile.so.1.0.17
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xb7fd9000)
        libFLAC.so.8 => /usr/lib/libFLAC.so.8 (0x4f826000)
        libogg.so.0 => /usr/lib/libogg.so.0 (0x410df000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/i686/cmov/libm.so.6 (0x4e0e7000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (0x4df8a000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x80000000)
$
...so, it may still be a K3b FLAC plugin bug and this is just a
workaround if libsndfile doesn't do anything special with 24-bit FLAC
files.

It would be interesting to know if Sebastian Trueg sees "FLAC" or "FLAC
(FLAC Lossless Audio Codec)" as the Type in K3b; if he sees "FLAC" then
there is likely a problem with Debian's flac, if they are being
processed by libsndfile and it does not do anything special then it
could be a K3b FLAC plugin or flac problem.

I should also mention that my build included the ffmpeg decoder (-dev
files from www.debian-multimedia.org) and lame encoder plugins, and I
needed to install over two dozen new packages by the time I finished
satisfying all the dependencies (I can now drop .wma files into an
audio CD project and bug #498767, "Dragging files to audiocd dialog
crashes K3b", has magically disappeared [which was the reason I was
building K3b myself])--so there is the possibility that something else
is having an effect.

HTH

Version: 1.0.5-3
Followup-For: Bug #463190

Hi,

I have this problem too, I get this error:
"Unable to handle the following files due to an unsupported format:"
If I check the properties it says "FLAC Audio", sample rate is 44,100 and sample
width 24 bit.

Any progress on this?

Regards,
Geoff

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Dear submitter,

Some time ago you filed a report in the Debian bug tracking system against the k3b package, http://bugs.debian.org/k3b

Upstream have now declared a major milestone and released K3b version 2.0, which has now been uploaded to Debian unstable. Upstream have claimed that your bug has been fixed-upstream via the forwarded link from to the upstream KDE Bugzilla, thus we are now closing your Debian report.

We have a fairly large backlog on bugs reported against K3b and require your assistance.

Could I ask you to install the K3b package from unstable and verify that your report has been resolved with version 2.0.

If your bug has been resolved then there is no need for any further action you your part.

If your bug has not been resolved, then please first check upstream reports for the reason upstream have closed their report. Then please add further comments against the upstream report and if necessary reopen both the upstream and Debian bug reports.

====================================================================================
The Debian team values users reports, but we are busy, and so we
kindly ask you to access the upstream support facilities:

There is a user mailing list which maybe used to get support:
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/k3b-user

To post a message to all the list members, send email to
k3b-user@lists.sourceforge.net.

If you know that the bug you want to report is in the "upstream"
code then please check/ file against the KDE Bug tracking system:
https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=k3b

You can also report bugs directly upstream using the K3b Help:Report Bug
menu entry.

If you feel that the bug is one that other Debian users should
know about then you are welcome to file a report in the Debian BTS
as well. Please keep in mind, however, that managing bug reports
is part of the maintainers' workload.

As a minimum we ask that you Cc: k3b-user@lists.sourceforge.net any
reports you file in the Debian Bug Tracking system so that upstream
are aware of the issue you are reporting.
