Package: gnome-system-tools
Version: 2.14.0-3
Severity: important
This report is based on my experience as desktop user in etch. It might
no longer apply, although I doubt anything has changed in this area.
AFAICT, the purpose of network-admin is fundamentally incompatible with
network-manager. network-admin is used by the user to manually configure
static networks, whereas network-manager is delegated by the user the
overall responsability of network setup.
When both are installed and running, user gets the impression that she can
configure a static network using network-admin, only to realize that her
network magically disappears after a few minutes without any obvious
explanation.
Please, can you add a Conflicts: network-manager to prevent these situations?
Preferably after splitting network-admin in a separate binary package, so
that this doesn't make it impossible to use the rest of gnome-system-tools
in combination with network-manager.

I think you can let NM handle e.g. your wifi and Debian scripts the
other interfaces (e.g. virtual machines), so you could actually find
some use to having the two; yes, it would be hairy and NM would break
your network from time to time, but wifi isn't always up. For example
I used to have NM configure my wired network automatically when I
plugged it in (ala ifplugd) and used Debian ifup/ifdown with
/etc/network/interfaces for wifi.
I think a conflict is too strong, but I wouldn't mind splitting
network-admin in a separate package pulled only by recommends to allow
saving space on desktop installs where NM is also pulled.
Yes, a patch is welcome.
Thanks,

Well, this took me a while longer than I thought. Here's a patch.
The debian/debhelper.mk hack is meant to be temporary, of course. I filed
a bug on cdbs requesting addition of dh_movefiles call already.

Hi,
I've just had a rather negative experience with gnome-network-admin in
a freshly installed lenny system. It *still* does not support WPA, making
it useless for many installations out there. It liberally overwrites the
contents of /etc/network/interfaces, and at least on one occasion blew
away a working configuration I had there (hence severity "serious"). There
is no good reason to keep a buggy, obsolete, but highly visible (can be
launched from "System" menu) package, when Network Manager is already
installed, and much more functional (worked pretty much out of the box).
I would really like to see network-admin removed in the next lenny point
release, unless these problems are not fixed.
Best regards,

It’s true that network-admin and network-manager don’t always play well
together, but NM is unsuitable to configure static connections. Unless
you can propose a working implementation of netconf, I have no miracle
solution that can work with all setups.
If the chosen solution is to remove the functionality, we should just
drop the “connections” tab, the others are still useful.
Cheers,

Package: gnome-network-admin
Severity: normal
Hi,
The latest updates of Squezze removes the package network-manager-gnome (0.7.1-1) to update the package gnome-network-admin (2.22.1-4 -> 2.22.1-5).
I use NM to DHCP or Wifi, NM is very complete.
I prefer to keep NM, if I try to remove gnome-network-admin, it eliminates a useful packages.
Both packages can not they coexist?
Regards.
