I cannot check now for the format of these START-INFO-DIR-ENTRY but
could it be that the additional spaces at the beginning are wrong?
Strange enough I cannot see anything in the above fix which might cause
this problem. Do you have any idea?

Nothing, complain to DEBIAN (!!!!) install-info which did give the error
message. It matches:
} elsif ($asread =~ m/^\*\s*([^:]+):(\s*\(([^\)]+)\)\.|:)\s*/) {
$menuentry= $1;
$description = $';
thus without leading spaces. I reassigned this bug to dpkg.

No, I didn't manage it because it was merged with other bugs and thus
told me "please use one of the merge ones". I gave up at the end ...
But it should be assigned in some way to dpkg and set to wishlist ...

I haven't investigated at all and I'm in no way an expert concerning info
files. But from what I've read, I must say that I'm not yet sure that
it's a bug in dpkg...
Is there a real standard on what an info file should look like ? Or are we
at the mercy of every output change of the info file generator ?
I'd gladly fix install-info (until we manage to get rid of it that is :))
if someone could point me to relevant information.
Cheers,

I checked texinfo manual, and there seems to be no indication about whether
direntry should/could begin with whitespace or not.

I don't think we should fix this in dpkg. I don't think it's a bug in
install-info, otherwise installing any package from testing/unstable
on etch will fail, like on a partial upgrade.

Sorry, but how do you come to this conclusion? Can you please explain?
Some facts:
- The texinfo manual nowhere states that a direntry must not have
leading spaces
- makeinfo till 4.8 (at least) did write the dir entry out without
leading spaces
- makeinfo from 4.11 on writes out the dir entry as present in the texi
file (see the original
- zsh seems to prefer leading spaces in the @direntry part
- Debian install-info uses a regexp that assumes that there are no
leading spaces
- GNU install-info doesn't have a problem with leading spaces
- changing the regexp seems quite trivial (although I didn't check for
any consequences)
So from these points I can loads deduce, but definitely not that this is
a bug in texinfo. It is SOLELY CONCERNED with the inability of Debian
install-info to read these .info file.
I will not start a re-assigning ping-pong game, but let it rot in the
BTS.
Hope that we will get rid of Debian i-i soon, the patches are already
included upstream.
Best wishes

This is probably true but we can't really fix install-info in etch for
example. So I'd suggest to patch makeinfo so that it produces info files
that can be installed by Debian's install-info for at least the lenny
cycle.
Then we can get back to the "new" way and avoid breakages because the new
install-info will be used everywhere. Until then it's best if GNU makeinfo and
Debian's install-info are able to work together.

We hope the same, really.

Ok, this is an argument. I will try to update makeinfo ASAP.

We could work a bit on the transition plan. Upstream cvs already
contains support for all cmd line options of Debian's i-i, so with the
next release that should be settled.
But then, should I create a new binary package from the texinfo source
called "install-info" which replaces dpkg <= whatever? Should be
essential probably?
Best wishes

I think it's best to have a new binary package yes. However it shouldn't
be essential IMO. We should simply update dpkg to depend on it for now.
And in the long term we might want to make packages depend on install-info
explicitely. Or maybe we can find some other solution (trigger-based
probably) so that it's auto-called by the installation of files in
/usr/share/info/ ? At that point, we can simply remove the dependency on
dpkg.

The reason was that otherwise sometimes the string

ends up in the dir entry section.
Now there is one problem which changes slightly the output format:
Here are the different outputs for the following input:

The problem are the starting spaces which DO make problems with some
other info file parsers. (At least Debian i-i which will still be around
for some time, but we are working hard on it!)
I don't understand all the internals, but I guess the switch from
add_word to insert created this problem.
Do you have a good suggestion how to fix that?
I tried adding another cm_noindent (); before calling
insert_string (line);
but that didn't help, because line contains leading spaces.
Thanks a lot for any suggestions and all the best

have the usual Debian releases' lifetime.

Thanks, if you have a pretest version I will first try to run *ALL*
Debian i-i commands using the GNU i-i and check. And as soon as you do a

Yes, definitely. If you've followed that, I'd appreciate very much if
you could check that in and write a changelog entry.

I did not really follow it. I just noticed that anybody proposed a
patch and believed that it would solve the problem. Short time ago I
noticed that the patch is already in the SVN and even applied during
build. I'll test ASAP if it solves the problem.
