Subject: smc: binary package should not depend on *-dev packages
Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2007 19:50:40 -0500
Package: smc
Version: 1.1-1
Severity: normal

the smc binary package currently depends on a development package,
libcegui-mk2-dev. in almost 100% of cases, binary packages do not
depend on development packages. usually the source package has
a build-dep on the development package.

thanks for the hard work.

Right. It should depend on libcegui-mk2-1 and not libcegui-mk2-dev.

-Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, libcegui-mk2-dev (>= 0.5.0-2)

Hi Michael,

Thanks for reporting. I have to work on cegui. I have to make some changes in
the packaging of the library to make it possible.

Subject: Please fix the dependencies of smc on -dev packages !
Date: Sat, 04 Apr 2009 23:32:51 +0200
  Hello,

  This bug has been open for more than year now without any activity.
Which files are needed by smc that are only in libcegui-mk2-dev ? There
are only .h files in the -dev package, as far as I can see. Does smc
need to parse header files ? Doesn't sound right.

  This is ridiculous, as libcegui-mk2-dev pulls in a lot of completely
unneeded -dev dependencies. Please fix that as soon as possible.

  Cheers,

	Vincent

Yes, it has been open for more than a year now. Files that are needed
by smc are:

libCEGUIDevILImageCodec.so
libCEGUIXercesParser.so
libCEGUIFalagardWRBase.so

Those files are shipped into the -dev package. Reason is:
http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/column/libpkg-guide/libpkg-guide.html#id249952

Look at the strace output when you don't install -dev package:

execve("./smc", ["./smc"], [/* 32 vars */]) = 0

As you can see, into that package, it is contained the *.so libs which
are needed to SMC to run correctly. I do think that it wouldn't be a
good idea to take out those files from -dev package.

I think there is no need of being ruge when giving arguments. Instead
of that, I believe that providing a solution would be better. I agree
in the part that -dev package is pulling uneeded dependecies.

Maybe a good workaround would be to make SMC use the *.so.* libs
instead of *.so. I can conclude it in this moment because my knowledge
is wider now. I'll take a look into SMC's source to see If I can make
it possible. I do apologize for the delay. If you are able to provide
a best solution for it I'll appreciate it.

  Mmmm...

  Looking at the source code of smc does not give any suitable match for
any of those:

~ fgrep -r DevILImageCodec .
~ fgrep -r XercesParser .
./src/video/video.cpp:  if(
CEGUI::System::getDefaultXMLParserName().compare( "XercesParser" ) == 0 )
./src/video/video.cpp:  if(
CEGUI::System::getDefaultXMLParserName().compare( "XercesParser" ) == 0 )
./src/video/video.cpp:  if(
CEGUI::System::getDefaultXMLParserName().compare( "XercesParser" ) == 0 )
./src/video/video.cpp:
//XercesParser::setSchemaDefaultResourceGroup( "schemas" );
 ~ fgrep -r FalagardWRBase .
./data/gui/schemes/TaharezLook.scheme:  <WindowRendererSet
Filename="CEGUIFalagardWRBase" />

  I strongly suspect the problem comes from the underlying libraries and
not the smc package itself.

  I'll have a look at the libraries and file a bug report for them. I'll
keep you posted.

  Cheers,

	Vincent

Changes:
 smc (1.8-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release. (Closes: #526445)
   * Bug 'FTBFS: Nonexistent build-dependency: libboost-filesystem1.37-dev' has
     been fixed in this revision. In order to accomplish that, smc now
     build-depends on unversioned boost packages. (Closes: #534087, #531120)
   * Bug 'smc: freezes machine and won't exit' is not found in this revision
     anymore. (Closes: #488744)
   * smc does not depend on libcegui-mk2-dev for executing properly. This
     problem was due the fact that the CEGUI's module loading depended on .so
     links, which were only found in the -dev package. CEGUI has been now changed
     in order to make it use *.so.* directly. (Closes: #454679)
   * Bumped standards version to 3.8.2
   * smc-music package has been updated to version 4.1.
