Thanks for letting me know. I tried with KDE 3.5.8 and Xfce 4.4.1,
and I see no problem with the icon. What desktop environment are you
using?

The key
  Icon=lastfm
should check for the lastfm icons in the hicolor icon theme. They are
included in the Debian and Ubuntu packages, so I wonder why you see
no icon.

As for the other changes to the .desktop file:

I removed the deprecated Encoding key. Thanks for pointing that out!
It will appear in the next upload which will arrive after upstream
releases 1.4.0.

The desktop specification lets the Exec key point to the full path or
just the executable name, so I don't see a problem there. Is there a
reason why you prefer the latter?

Invoking gtk-update-icon-cache solves the issue in GNOME, probably using
dh_icons in rules could fix this as well.

Thank you.

Yes I suspect adding dh_icons would take care of that. But right now
I'm not sure how this fits with the overall plan to support icon
caches in Debian.[0] This affects more than just lastfm. For
instance, I imagine you could file a similar bug against every KDE
package.[1]

And since lastfm uses cdbs, I'd first like to see how the cdbs
maintainers handle this. They currently have a problem with it.[2]

So for now, I'm going to gather more information and wait to see how
this shakes out.

Cheers,

John

[1] Though to me this seems more like a GNOME problem if it can't
gracefully show an uncached icon.

After examining the build logs more closely, it looks like the switch to
dh automatically calls dh_icons.
