[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: fuse
Version: 2.7.1-1
Severity: wishlist
User: ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu hardy ubuntu-patch

We wanted to ship ntfs-3g by default in Ubuntu. In the process we
observed that one might have a separate /usr but still want to mount an
NTFS filesystem on boot. This is made a lot easier if FUSE is available
on the root filesystem.

The attached patch implements this, and deals with things like moving
any old statoverrides over; would you consider applying it? Note that it
assumes that the version in which it will be applied is 2.7.1-2, and
will need to be updated if that is not true.

This change was originally made by Phillip Lougher.

Thanks,

Hi,

After some discussion with others debian developpers, I really do not
see why you want to do that.
I'd suggest than ntfs volumes should be mounted after /usr. It should be
always the case if you do not have a bad fstab.
Why not checking if the fstab is sane, rather than adding unecessary
binaries into / ?

Regards, Adam.

Frankly, it's a lot easier for everyone not to have to worry about the
ordering to that extent. Sure, the installer *could* arrange it. But
pretty much every other filesystem is mountable before /usr, so it
wouldn't remotely surprise me if somebody naïvely added an NTFS
filesystem in front of /usr. I much prefer a robust system to a system
that sacrifices robustness for 164KB of extra space in /; in my view
164KB is not worth the time people are likely to end up spending trying
to work out what broke.

I think it should be a general rule that tools needed to mount
filesystems should be in /. It makes debugging and system recovery a
whole lot easier.

I also think it's very likely that at some point somebody will want to
use a FUSE filesystem for /usr itself. FUSE is getting more and more
useful for all sorts of things. It belongs in / so that its usefulness
isn't artifically limited.

Thanks,

Hello,

It has been discussed with others debian developpers and all agree it's
useless for the debian project.
Moreover, ntfs-3g is now able to use its own libfuse, so you should
rather check this instead of wanting fuse in /.

Best regards, Adam.

Thanks for your consideration. Since I disagree with your decision for
the reasons I outlined earlier (and, frankly, I'm disappointed that you
have not responded to them explicitly, but instead simply invoked
unnamed "other Debian developers"; with my Debian developer hat on I do
not agree), I think we will continue to apply this in Ubuntu.

> Moreover, ntfs-3g is now able to use its own libfuse, so you should

This is a bad idea as you'll have to fix bugs twice, or, perhaps more
relevantly, any security updates to the common code will have to be
applied twice. I expect you'll hear from the security team sooner or
later about this, as they are generally unimpressed by this approach.

Does this mean that you would be willing to move ntfs-3g to /?

Cheers,
