I'm not sure this is an xserver-xorg issue. It seems to have something to do with icewm. When I bring up a menu with Ctrl-Esc it locks up. If I bring it up with the mouse by clicking on the link at the bottom of the screen it doesn't happen. However, it has started doing this since the recent upgrade. -- Anthony Campbell - ac@acampbell.org.uk Microsoft-free zone - Using Linux Gnu-Debian http://www.acampbell.org.uk (blog, book reviews, on-line books and sceptical articles)

Can you look in /var/log/aptitude or /var/log/dpkg.log to find out what has been upgraded recently? Also, if X really locks up, ctrl-alt-fX to switch VT should not work, ctrl-alt-backspace to exit X should not either, the Xorg process could be using 100% CPU (login by ssh to check this), and Xorg.0.log might contain some errors about event being rejected. Do you observe any of these symptoms? Brice

When the lockup occurs no keys at all work, nor does the mouse, and I have to switch off and reboot. I can't see anything in Xorg.log but it only has the latest startup log for X, which is currently working. (I've disabled the Ctrl-Esc sequence in icewm.) Here is the relevant section of dpkg.log, showing what was done at the last upgrade (sorry its's long): ======================================== 2007-11-19 09:25:56 upgrade xserver-xorg 1:7.3+5 Hi! My X-server just locked up, too. It's the first time this happend (at least this year ;), it might have to do with the update I did yesterday (I'm using "sid"): At least xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg were updated. Versions: xserver-xorg-core: Version: 2:1.4.1~git20071117-1 xserver-xorg: Version: 1:7.3+6 The mouse cursor still moved, but everything else was frozen. I couldn't even change the tty with SysRq+r Alt+F2 (or other F-Key). chvt didn't change the terminal either. It didn't switch until I finally killed the X-server (which didn't restore the video mode). strace, ltrace and gdb didn't show much (They didn't even respond to ^C -- I had to kill them) I'm not sure about the strace-output, don't remember it exactly: It was a single line, I think it said someting about SIGALARM being raised. Look in your /var/log/dpkg.log or /var/log/aptitude to see whether xserver-xorg-video-ati or mesa has been updated recently too. What were you doing when the lockup appeared? Anyhow, you should probably make sure that you are using xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.7.196 currently in experimental. It's hard to say whether your problem is related to this bug report, which we don't yet whether it's caused by X or icewm either... Brice

I'll put excerpts from dpkg.log below xserver-xorg-video-ati is at Version: 1:6.6.193-3 It hasn't been updated (at least) since 2007-09-26 12:13:09 upgrade xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.3-2 1:6.6.193-3 > What were you doing when the lockup appeared? The workspace I tried to switch away from had a gnome-terminal and a gnome-panel on it. The destination workspace had the same panel and either another gnome-terminal or iceweasel. I just had another lockup before updating, I'll write again if
xserver-...-ati 6.7.196 crashes, too.
This time there was absolutely no output from strace, ltrace or gdb.
Gdb even had an "internal error" when trying to attach.
No messages in Xorg.0.log, either. It just ends with:
[...]
(II) RADEON(0): [agp] Mode 0x1f000207 [AGP 0x10de/0x01e0; Card 0x1002/0x5157]
(II) ConfiguredMouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
(II) 3rd Button detected: disabling emulate3Button
It locked up about a minute after I started xine (but the window wasn't on
the active workspace). Now xine has been running for about the
quarter of an hour without a lockup.

Sawfish toggled the windows state (changing the menu-entry from "maximise" to "unmaximise") but the window didn't get maximised. Then I tried to upgrade from xserver-xorg-core_1.4.1~git20071117-1_i386.deb to 2:1.4.1~git20071119-1. The result: I didn't even get to see gdm. The screen just turned off. Now I'm back to the old xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg-video-ati. Tell me if there's something I should try out. Roni

Let's keep this one for Anthony's lockup with icewm and intel hardware. Your hardware and software config are different from this one. I will merge the bug reports later if we really find out that it is the same problem. You should probably revert to xserver-xorg-core 1.4-3 (take it from [1]) and ati 6.6.3 (from testing). Check that there are no lockup. And then upgrade to xserver-xorg-core 2:1.4.1~git20071119-1 (from unstable). If the lockup appears then, open a new bug against xserver-xorg-core. If xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.7.196 never works (even after a reboot?), that would be another bug against xserver-xorg-video-ati, but we should not mix them. [Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
I am experiencing similar symptoms running Sid. I first noticed that the
CPU load created by Xorg had gone up significantly after doing an upgrade
on November 15th. Unfortunately I can't give you the full details as I
was in the process of trying to run reportbug when the most recent freeze
up occurred and in order to get work done I'm on a different computer.
Here are the details I had recorded prior to the last freeze-up, hopefully
it is of some help.

I have attached my dpkg.log.
As the others have reported I am unable to switch to a text console when
the freeze-up occurs. Only the mouse remains responsive. When I log in
remotely I can see that Xorg is consuming all of the available CPU.
Stopping gdm, killing Xorg, and then starting gdm appears to reset things.
As with the others I have noticed that changing workspaces appears to
cause the total lock-up, however I am noticing significant CPU usage by
Xorg (in the 40%+ range) when doing simple things like changing tabs
within gnome-terminal. Scrolling a web page in iceweasel pushes the CPU
to 100%.
I have attached my dpkg.log.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
This morning I wanted to do an apt-get update/apt-get upgrade, hoping that there had been an xorg update. At the gdm login prompt I hit <ctrl><alt><F1> to get to a text console (so as to avoid the risk of a freeze up). Instead of getting a text console my screen went black and the monitor's power button turned from green to amber, indicating it had gone into power saving mode or was otherwise not receiving a signal. I tried several different keys to "wake up" the system without luck. Pressing <ctrl><alt><F7> caused the monitor power button to turn back to green and I was returned to the gdm login prompt. Repeated attempt to get to a text console produced the same behaviour. Further, when I rebooted the system at the point where it would normally stop X and show text output the monitor was again put into power saving mode. This may explain, at least partially, why people experiencing this problem have been unable to get to a text console when X has frozen up on them. - Ben

By the way, I recall doing something like # /etc/init.d/xdm start; sleep 222; /etc/init.d/xdm stop doesn't stop the (certainly wedged by that time) monster. On still has to hit the power button, (stopping the disks too, as I don't know where the "reset" button is on my Thinkpad r50e.)

I've found that an Alt-SysRq-k (kill all processes on current virtual
console) is a much safer way to restart X after this error occurs.
Certainly safer than pulling the power.
I have this exact issue on a system running:
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//i810_drv.so
(II) Module i810: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.4.0, module version = 2.2.0
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 2.0
Time to attempt a rollback, I think.

Package: xserver-xorg-core Version: 2:1.4.1~git20071212-2 --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Hi, after installing the latest version, the hangup was solved, thank you. Now there is another effect, after creating the same situation which caused the hang (using ratpoison C-t exclam or colon and hitting return there) all key combinations which are based on ctrl-alt (like ctrl-alt-f1 or -backspace) ceased working. Is there anything I can trace or look deeper into? Following the recent upgrade of xserver-xorg I tried upgrading xserver-xorg-core again. The problem with ctrl-alt-esc in Icewm has gone away but there is a new bug. Crtl-alt-del no longer closes X though I can do so via the popup panel in Icewm. I have reverted to the backported version of xserver-xorg-core.
