Description : A free uPnP & DNLA media server

uShare is a uPnP (TM) A/V & DLNA Media Server. It implements the server
component that provides UPnP media devices with information on available
multimedia files. uShare uses the built-in http server of libupnp to
stream the files to clients.

GeeXboX uShare is able to provide access to both images, videos, music
or playlists files (see below for a complete file format support list).
It does not act as an UPnP Media Adaptor and thus, can't transcode
streams to fit the client requirements.

Hi!

This ITP was filed 5 months ago. Has there been any progress in
packaging ushare for Debian?

Cheers,

Martin

Hi,

Any reason why ushare still hasn't been uploaded to debian?

It's been packaged in Ubuntu, so most of the work seems to have been
done already...

If the original submitter no longer intends to package the software,
this ITP should be updated.

Thanks

I do intend to package it, but I've run into a bit of trouble.

ushare doesn't talk to my Xbox 360 any more. A dashboard update at some
point in the past killed something. Without a test platform, I can't tell if
it works or not.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Apart from the xbox, there are lots of other devices that support fuppes.

For example, Series 8000 of Philips LCD tv's officially supports fuppes as a
upnp/dlna server.

There a are a number of compilation recipes for fuppes on debian, but it
would be great to have a package as we had in etch.

Can we still expect a package any time soon? I understand that as one is
already available in Ubuntu, it should be relatively trivial.

Not sure if I could help somehow, let me know, and we can see.

Thanks.

I appreciate that fuppes is a good alternative to ushare, but this ITP is
for ushare and fuppes is out of scope for this ITP.

Recently I have got ushare working with my xbox 360 and will endeavour to
complete packaging shortly.

 > Not sure if I could help somehow, let me know, and we can see.

I'd like to see a package for fuppes, since transcoding is a useful feature
(especially since many devices don't support media types such as Matroska,
which can be easily container-converted to another format so as to be played
without quality loss).

I'll try and finish up packaging for ushare soon and get it into unstable.

Kind regards,
rob.

Sure, I don't have a great deal of time right now. I do have a package I put
together, although it's incredibly basic and nowhere near complete. I also
have libdlna0 packaged as a dependency (since ushare needs it). If you'd
like the source, please let me know and I'll ensure it's available
somewhere.

Kind regards,
rob.

Michael, since I ushare hasn't yet made it into Debian, I might offer a little advice.

One of the original goals when I intended to package ushare for Debian was to get INOTIFY/DNOTIFY support in so that restarts weren't required to receive new media notification events. However, I found a number of other problems in using this software - various items in the configuration file were ignored completely and only permitted as command line arguments (despite being documented for the configuration file).

ushare isn't building quite so happily for me any more, and in about a weeks' time will hit three years since it was released.

I'm tempted to advise closing this and suggesting the use of minidlna instead. It meets the original goal of having DNOTIFY support as well as being lightweight and headless in operation. I've not had any trouble with building it, configuring it or using it.

Since the ushare site declares development as discontinued, it may be preferable to use minidlna instead.

Regards,
rob.

retitle 450520 RFP: ushare -- A free uPnP & DNLA media server
noowner 450520
thanks

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of ushare back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 6 months.

If you are still interested in adopting ushare, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

retitle 450520 ITP: ushare -- A free uPnP & DNLA media server
 owner 450520 !
 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing <450520@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

Just a side note to anybody picking this RFP up in future:

uShare has fallen out of active development, and last time I attempted to set it up, it did not work with my hardware.

I strongly suggest looking at minidlna as an alternative to a DLNA server daemon.
