Can you try with earlier qemu 0.8 from etch? Perhaps with the *bios
packages too.

If I install the package from etch (onto a lenny system) and call
qemu -cdrom binary.iso
I get a qemu window that says
QEMU 0.8.2 monitor - type 'help' for more information
(qemu) [cursor]
I got further than that with the lenny version.

Message #20 received at 449085@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
I get the same error with virtualbox, so it's probably an issue with the
kernel used by the guest system. I had reported earlier that newer kernels
(post 2.6.18) don*t work with virtualbox.

I am unable to reproduce the bug with qemu 0.9.1. I am therefore marking
the bug as closed.
