Subject: fontconfig: Latest upgrade broke antialiasing in Qt4 apps.
Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2007 14:46:59 +0100
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: fontconfig
Version: 2.4.91-1
Severity: normal

Since the latest upgrade of fontconfig, all Qt4 apps use a non-aliased
font (screenshot of qtconfig-qt4 attached).
It looks like "Sans Serif" isn't matched to Bitstream Vera Sans or
DejaVu Sans anymore). If I select one of those fonts manually in
qtconfig-qt4, I get the previous behaviour back.

Weird. I'll enable bitmap fonts and fix this today. Thanks for filing a
bug.

Just to let you know: On my system Qt4 apps are still affected by this
bug with fontconfig 2.5.0-2.

Thanks. Can you figure out which font the apps are matching now? One way
is to use lsof. The trouble is that Qt4 has it's own font matching
mechanism that it layers on top of fontconfig which integrates core and
client fonts in a rather inconsistent fashion.

Hi Keith,

I'm raising the severity a bit, now that KDE4 is available in
experimental, which uses Qt4 extensively.

Cheers,
Michael

Is there a bug on freedesktop's bugzilla describing this problem? I'm
tracking the 2.6 release as bug 14062 and would like to make sure this
one doesn't slip past my upstream release process.

I haven't submitted a bug on fd.o bugzilla and I also couldn't find one
that matches my problem after a quick search.

Hi Keith,

sorry for asking again, but has there been any progress on this matter?
Does it help you if I file such a bug at the fd.o bugzilla?

Same problem here. Purging of both ttf-arphic-uming and ttf-wqy-zenhei
did the trick for me. But if I understand correctly, this is due to qt4
"which integrates core and client fonts in a rather inconsistent fashion"?

Shouldn't this bug be moved to qt4 then? The mechanism looks broken.

Hello.

I am also affected by this issue on current Debian Squeeze (fontconfig
2.8.0-2, libqtcore4 4:4.5.3-4).

All Qt4 applications do not respect the system-wide setting that the font
hinting and anti-aliasing should be enabled. The attached screenshot shows a
window of qt3-qtconfig (in the background) which uses proper anti-aliased
fonts, and a window of qt4-qtconfig (in the foreground) with bad fonts.

I do not have the ttf-arphic-uming or ttf-wqy-zenhei packages installed, which
are mentioned above as possibly causing the problem.

Qt applications' fonts look ugly (not antialiased)

tried several fixes (http://sokito.wordpress.com/2009/03/07/qt4-antialiasing-problem-in-debian/ http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=46535 http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=42077) with no luck :-(

Hi Michael!

I have tried to reproduce the behaviour without success, but I may be missing
something. Of course, lots have happened since the last update to this bug.

Can you please test if this bug is still valid for you?

Kinds regards, Lisandro.

No, I don't have that system anymore.
I guess the bug is too old to still be useful. Feel free to close.

Michael
