When `/usr/sbin/amavisd-new-cronjob sa-sync' is executed (from
`/etc/cron.d/amavisd-new'), it’s output gets mailed everytime to root.
Below is a patch (adapted from sarge's script to make it silent.

Watch out, it might not work well depending on what do_amavis_cmd has to
run.

And now that the job has run again, I’ve realized that the patch is
incorrect :-[

In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:
* debian/amavisd-new-cronjob:
- fix output redirect to /dev/null, if the script is being called
by SUUSER
- Also redirect STDERR to /dev/null, because sa-learn complains
there that it is disabled (LP: #165184)
We thought you might be interested in doing the same.

Hi,
amavis user is created without permission to use a shell. This prevents
su - amavis -c 'whatever you do'
to work, so /usr/sbin/amavisd-new-cronjob won't work launched as root.
As possible workaround you could move /etc/cron.daily/amavisd-new to
/etc/cron.d/foo and configure it to use amavis as user. This is the
reason why cron job works for sa-sync.
Best Regards,
Manolo Díaz

Hi,
the amavis cron.d job is still spewing out messages:
Subject: Cron <amavis@honk> test -e /usr/sbin/amavisd-new-cronjob && /usr/sbin/amavisd-new-cronjob sa-sync

Are there any plans to resolv this for lenny? Anything I can help with?

Message #46 received at 447040@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
here I confirm that the problem is only present for cron.d/amavisd-new as
it is run by the amavis user and so there is no "su -c" involved.
It's easy to reproduce with a script like this:
------------test.sh-------------
#!/bin/sh
CMD="/bin/echo foo >/dev/null"
exec ${CMD}
--------------------------------
$ ./test.sh
foo >/dev/null
$
I made different tests with different commands using ">/dev/null"
outside of quotes in the amavisd-new-cronjob script and cannot see any
side effect, it properly redirect STDOUT to /dev/null and keep STDERR if
any:
-do_amavis_cmd "/usr/bin/sa-learn --sync >/dev/null"
+do_amavis_cmd "/usr/bin/sa-learn --sync" >/dev/null
But you can also just move the >/dev/null in the if/then/else part as
this is common to both commands.
