First of all, you have to use qemu on amd64 and not qemu-system-x86-64.

Second, make sure you have the unstripped qemu packages, as the stripped
ones from Debian do not work with kqemu anyway (stripped wrt/ the bios
files, see #402289). Non-stripped qemu is available at
http://daniel.debian.net/packages-other/qemu

Hmm..?

Using qemu on amd64 invokes i386 emulator.
qemu-system-x86_64 on amd64 allows use of kqemu.

So, is Debian qemu crippled as such that it's unable to boot Debian
installer?

[ either i'm completely wrong here (which is possible; only had an amd64
capable machine for short time), or, this has changed over time. ]

however, lacking an amd64 machine, i'll assume you are right here.

stripped qemu packages from debian has never worked with kqemu anyway, yes.

Hmm? It always seems to work (with kqemu) with i386 emulation on amd64
on my system. amd64/amd64 seemed to have a problem.

I got the same problem with Lenny on amd64 guest/host.
When running automatic install, it crashes within a minute.
kqemu was build with m-a. Qemu runs acceptable w/o kqemu.

Maybe kqemu-source should be removed from amd64?

Testcase:

$ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 512 -hda hda.img -cdrom
debian-LennyBeta2-amd64-netinst.iso
