Subject: Can'not get any display with Radeon Xpress 200
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.2-5
Severity: grave
After switching to 7.3+2 X-window became unusable. I have to dual-head
setup with two different graphic cards. One of them is a PCI Matrox
Millenium (2064W) and the other is a Radeon Xpress 200 (onboard). After
the upgrade I could only see a blank screen on Radeon but Matrox had a
normal display. I have also tried a single head display with Radeon but
this didn't help either. I am attaching lspci -nn and xorg.conf
configurations below. I also had to revert back my xorg installation to have usable system. So my package information in this bug report does not show the exact state of the packages when this error occured.

Hi,
Please find the attached Xorg.0.log file. I also tried disabling DRI completely as stated in Bug #437321 but that didn't work either. I also think this problem is not related with dual card setup, because X can enable my display connected to Matrox but not Radeon (w/ the dual-head setup). I have never managed to get a display w/ my Radeon Xpress 200 card on 7.3+2.
Thanks,

You should try disabling DRI on the Radeon card (with Option "DRI" "off"
in the corresponding section Device in xorg.conf). Check Xorg.0.log to
be sure DRI is actually disabled on the Radeon then. We have a bug
report [1] about DRI leading to blank screen on Xpress200 with recent
drivers and kernels (DRI was not supported earlier).

Assuming you downgraded back to Xorg 7.2 and Xserver 1.3, could you try
the following old xserver-xorg-video-ati package? It's the same driver
for the old Xserver 1.3. It will help us know whether the problem is in
Xserver 1.4 or in the driver.

No it doesn't. Also X process can not be killed with a -9 as well. As you might imagine Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't bring back the console too.
But with a dual-head setup Ctrl+Alt+Backspace works and X can be killed.

Ok I am reassigning back to ati driver then. It looks like another
Xpress 200 chipset related problem. You might want to try
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.193-1 currently in experimental, it
contains some fixes for these chipsets. Or you can stay in testing (ati
6.6.3 + xserver-xorg-core 1.3). Or you can stay in unstable and use a
rebuild of the old 6.6.3 driver for Xserver 1.4, I'll build that soon
anyway.

To use this package, upgrade back to unstable (xserver-xorg-core 1.4 and
drivers) and then replace your xserver-xorg-video-ati with this one
(dpkg -i foo.deb). If it works, there is no problem for you with Xserver
1.4, only the ati driver 6.6.193-3 is broken.

I have tried your unstable package, and it works fabulously. In fact I am using it right now.
I have also tried the package in experimental but that one gave me a segfault. What I did was, first I upgraded my X
to unstable version (7.3). Then I got the experimental package with
apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati -t experimental
. And I am attaching the log file as well.

From the log, it looks like you had the MGA board enabled in xorg.conf.
I am afraid this setup cannot work since the new ati driver 6.7.193 uses
RandR 1.2 while the mga driver does not, and the server does not seem to
appreciate multiple boards in RandR 1.2 so far, and it's not clear it's
going to be fixed soon unfortunately. So it'd be good to comment out all
MGA related lines in xorg.conf and test with 6.7.193-1 again. That would
help us know:
* does ati 6.7.193 fixes the problem for your board that 6.6.193 has?
(you might need to disable DRI again, not sure)
* how does the server behave when mixing RandR 1.2 and non-RandR drivers
We could also imagine that you test the new RandR 1.2 MGA driver (1.9.99
in experimental), but you might hate me if I ask for more testing :) And
this driver seems pretty young so far, so we'll see that later.
thanks,
Brice

Hi there,
Ok I have made some more tests. I have installed xorg packages from unstable. I have also install mga and ati drivers from experimental. What happens is whether I turn off definitions for Mga or not I get a segfault. I am attaching the Xorg.0.log again. In this log file I have executed X with a single head-setup. Let me know if you need more information. I can do some more testing I think.

May I see your xorg.conf when MGA is disabled? I want to make sure there
is no dangerous line, for instance "Screen 0 Rightof 1", RandR drivers
generally don't like these. Even with MGA disabled, it could cause ATI
6.7.192 to crash.
If it even crashes when the whole dual-board config is disabled, the
next step would be to remove the MGA board from the machine so that the
server does not even try to look at it, I'll understand if you can't do
this :)

Ok, thanks for testing. So, to summarize:
* The ATI driver 6.6.193 is broken in this board but 6.7.193 is fine.
* Xserver 1.4 + ATI RandR 1.2 does not accept another board/driver in
the config, and it might take time to get this fixed... I am
retitling/reassigning back to the Xserver now that ATI driver issues are
clarified.

Aldemir,
We are trying to make sure that Xserver 1.4 is really the problem here.
So we want to know whether Xserver 1.3 works when a RandR 1.2 (such as
ATI) and another one (such as MGA) are used at the same time.
I just build a very recent snapshot of the ATI driver for testing/Lenny:
http://people.debian.org/~bgoglin/rebuilds/ati-6.7.198-Xserver1.3/
Could you test it (after downgrading to xserver-xorg-core 1.3 from
testing if necessary) and see whether it works with the MGA driver enabled
at the same time? You'll just need a config with both drivers, probably
very similar to what you had at the beginning of this bug report.
You might need to try with and without some advanced config such as
Screen 0 "Screen 1" 0 0
Screen 1 "Screen 2" RightOf "Screen 1"
in the ServerLayout section.
thanks in advance,
Brice

Aldemir,
We
are
trying
to
make
sure
that
Xserver
1.4
is
really
the
problem
here.
So
we
want
to
know
whether

another

it

You'll
just
need
a
config
with
both

probably
very

RightOf
"Screen

in
the
ServerLayout
section.
thanks
in
