Subject: initramfs ignores ide lernel cmd line parameters
Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2007 12:12:55 +0200 (CEST)
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.90a

Some kernel command line parameter, like ide=nodma, for example, are
ignored by the ramdisk's script.

When booting from Compact flas, for example, the ide=nodma on the kernel
command line is useless, since ide modules loaded from ramdisk scripts
ignores them.

Some guys from LinuxFromScratch discussed the problem here :
http://wiki.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/ticket/2023

and they provided a patch here :

Hm, really? According to my tests, the ide modules are already loaded
before mountroot in live-initramfs is called.

yes none of the mentioned patches apply to initramfs-tools.

if you want some module option put it in /etc/modprobe.d.
afaik ide takes care of it's own boot option by itself.

How would I specify the nodma then?

If it is only read from options present in the ramdisk I cannot boot
on devices with broken DMA (intel BX/LX/VX chipsets with certain
CD-ROMs for one).

Thanks

as a boot arg for example, kernel parses it.
and it shows up later in /proc/cmdline

yes, but this is the whole subject of the bug report! That doesn't work.
The boot args are ignored.

ide=nodma as a kernel option is ignored because some module loading patch
(specific to Debian IIRC) hardcodes loading "ide". So even if you add the
boot arg specifically not to do that, it happens anyway before the boot
args are parsed.

(sorry if this is quite vague/wrong, it is from memory from some months
ago last time I tried to beat it)

I am also stung by this bug due to a hosed DMA controller on my laptop.

I will boot my laptop with this problem when I am not at work and to try
and hunt down the exact spot again. (it was a while ago I found it, but
I'm pretty sure I did find it. [Lenny])

here are a few potential suspects:

Lenny:/usr/share/initramfs-tools$ grep -r -w ide * | cut -f1 -d: | uniq
hook-functions
hooks/live
scripts/init-top/all_generic_ide
scripts/live-premount/modules
scripts/live

or perhaps in modutils.
?

thanks,
Hamish

Eventually, live-boot will support additional stuff (it's on our todo
page at http://live.debian.net/devel/live-boot/todo), but since these
are wishlist items open for long time, requireing quite a bit of work to
implement and nobody worked on them for years, I do not see much point
in keeping it rotting in the bts, that's what we have the todo page for
(that includes above things, and much more).
