Package: cultivation
Version: 8.20070809.dfsg1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: game is unplayable

When I try to move my gardener, the place it moves to is different to
where I clicked. No matter where I click I can't prevent it from moving
off the land onto the sea and all the way to the edge of the sea. After
a couple of clicks, every click is vertical, towards the top or the
bottom of the playing area. Also, defining the plot doesn't seem to work
right. Clicking on the controls/buttons for the tutorial and for pause,
quit, pick up water, the seeds and so on works fine though. As a result,
cultivation is completely unplayable here. I have a laptop, with
touchpad and USB mouse, neither work. If this is likely to be a problem
specific to my setup, please downgrade.

I can't reproduce it on my end (ubuntu edgy, my build from source).

However, I do recall seeing that once or twice while testing... but I think
that resizing the window or maybe quitting and restarting the game fixed the
problem. I don't recall. In any event, it didn't seem like a serious
problem, so unfortunately, I never looked into it. Now I wish I had.

Just tried it on another machine here (faster graphics card, Ubuntu Feisty,
fresh build from cultivation v8 source). Cannot reproduce.

It has something to do with coordinate translation between mouse and world
coords. Maybe different graphics cards (or different X servers) feed mouse
coords into GLUT windows differenly. Can you ask the bug reporter (or those
who can reproduce it) to see if resizing or repositioning the window
helps? Also, is it consistent (always happens on the problem machines)? Or
is it something that goes away after restarting Cultivation?

Also, the fact that the button clicks still work makes me suspicious that
it's something in my code... please keep me posted. I hope we can fix this
soon.

Jason

It seems to be related with whatever library that might have changed in
Debian, because using version 7 results in the same mouse errors than the 8
now.

Dunno if it might be a bug somewhere, or a bug thas has been corrected in
some library.

I'm using the intel xorg driver with xorg 1.3.0.0. Resizing/moving the
window doesn't help. I always have the problem with cultivation 8 on my
Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. Restarting cultivation doesn't help. The
version with the patch that deavid wrote works fine though.

PS: thanks for making such awesome games Jason :)

thanks

During the tests we carried out to find out what was the problem with
cultivation, we noticed that it seems to be related to the latest upgrade in
libglu. The attached proof-of-concept program works OK in previous versions
of Debian, but it doesn't teem to work in SID anymore, so we're convinced
that the problem itself is in glu. We've made a quick hack to Cultivation so
that at least the package is still usable, but this bug might also affect
other programs. Please have a look at it.

Please ask whatever else you need to know.

Greetings,
Miry

Hi,

So you're saying it works fine with libglu1-mesa 7.0.1-1 while it does
not work anymore in 7.0.1-2? Or do you mean it works in Etch (6.5.1-0.6)
and not in Sid? It'd be good to clarify which exact Mesa releases work
or not so that we can properly report this upstream. Several new
upstream Mesa releases have been uploaded in the last months. But Mesa
7.0.x are the stabilization releases of Mesa 6.5.x, so no regression
were supposed to happen in Sid recently.

Thanks,
Brice

My perception is that it happened in the upgrade from 7.0.1-1 to 7.0.1-2,
but I cannot confirm it myself, as I do not have 7.0.1-1 installed in any of
my machines AFAIK. Maybe in the lappy, I'll have a look at it and see if
we're lucky. The proof of concept program I attached in the report should be
enough to test it.

I downloaded 6.5.1-0.6 from etch and 7.0.1-1 from lenny. Both are fine,
but 7.0.1-2 breaks cultivation.

Ok thanks, there are very few patches between these releases, so I think
I found the bad one:

http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=mesa/mesa.git;a=commitdiff;h=3069f3484186df09b671c44efdb221f50e5a6a88

I rebuilt Mesa after reverting this commit and the behavior reported in
the bug report does not seem to occur anymore.

I'll forward this bug upstream.

Brice

The problem has been fixed-upstream, I just checked, cultivation works
fine again. The next upload of libglu1-mesa will solve this (probably
Mesa 7.0.2-1 then). In the meantime, people having this problem should
use libglu1-mesa 7.0.1-1 (it will remain available in
http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/08/10/debian/pool/main/m/mesa/).
