Subject: adduser: warn users that they need to logout and log back in after adding themselves to a new group
Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2007 14:36:53 +1200
Package: adduser
Version: 3.104
Severity: wishlist

If you add yourself to a group, it doesn't take effect until you log out and log back in. adduser should warn about that since it is such a common problem and so many people get bitten by this at some point.

This is basically normal behavior of Unices and, IIRC, even Windows. I
don't think that a tool like adduser should try to teach users the
basics of their systems.

Greetings:

This bug has been tagged as "wontfix" since 2011 with no further
discussion. Enough time has passed to justify closing it.

Indeed, users normally must start a new session when their group
memberships have changed before the updates take effect. This is
expected behavior, and any admin invoking "adduser" should be aware of
this requirement.

The "adduser" tool is already chatty. I hope to see the program quiet
down with its output as we make progress with updates. Adding another
diagnostic should be done very carefully, in my opinion.

I think closing this issue is reasonable at this time. Let me know if
there are problems with this decision.

Thanks!
