Does this happen with 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13? Does it happen with 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2?

hey Jari & WATANABE,
I don't have the hardware in question, but there are a couple
changesets that look like they might fix this.

I've committed one of these potential fixes, I'd appreciate it if you
both of you could test a snapshot build that includes this fix.

See http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernel for information on installing
snapshots from the etch branch.

The patch was commited to svn in r9341, so you'll want to wait until a
version >= 2.6.18.dfsg.1-14~snapshot.9341 is available (should be
within the next 24 hours).

There are 64-bit kernels for both 32-bit and 64-bit
userspaces. According to the build stats page[1], the 64-bit builds
are not yet available:

Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2007 15:13:18 +0300
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch1
Followup-For: Bug #438458

I also have a P5B motherboard, and I think the freeze on boot is
related to the following backport (from the changelog):

  * Backport support for i965 to agp too. (closes: #406111)

Asus P5B has an Intel P965-chipset (without G), and the freeze happens
after the message

agpgart: Detected an Intel 965G Chipset.

Earlier versions, at least linux-image-2.6.18-4-amd64 version
2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2 works fine.

Also, as a simple workaround, if I delete intel_agp.ko from /lib/modules/...
so that it cannot be loaded, then also version 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch1
works fine.

It freezes too just like others.
Package didn't make initrd.img. So I made it myself. Is this OK?

# mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd-img-2.6.18-5-686-bigmem
2.6.18-5-686-bigmem

Now running kernel is 2.6.18-4-686-bigmem

Well, thanks for testing anyway. I've been assuming this bug is fixed
upstream, but I'm not seeing an obvious fix. Let's check that first,
and maybe it'll help narrow down the fix.

Can you test this:
  http://snapshot.debian.net/2007/04/11/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.20-1-686-bigmem_2.6.20-1_i386.deb
and if that doesn't work:
  http://snapshot.debian.net/2007/05/23/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.21-1-686-bigmem_2.6.21-2_i386.deb

Yeah, that's fine.

I have the same motherboard as Jari (Asus P5B) and my computer also freezes
after the message: "agpgart: Detected an Intel 965G Chipset."
The P5B mobo has an Intel 965 chipset (not 965G), and therefore, I
believe the following patch in 2.6.22 solves the problem:

--- (from http://www.eu.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.22)

commit 47d46379eb66278107947729e34a833c76dca252
Author: Wang Zhenyu <zhenyu.z.wang@intel.com>
Date: Thu Jun 21 13:43:18 2007 +0800

[AGPGART] intel_agp: don't load if no IGD and AGP port

After i915 chip, GMCH has no AGP port. Origin bridge driver in device
table will try to access illegal regs like APBASE, APSIZE, etc. This
    may cause problem.

I have tried the following kernels:

linux-image-2.6.18-4-amd64 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2 OK
linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13 freezes
linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch1 freezes
linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch2 freezes
linux-image-2.6.21-2-amd64 2.6.21-6 freezes
linux-image-2.6.22-2-amd64 2.6.22-4 OK

In all cases the freeze is after the message "agpgart: Detected an Intel 965G
Chipset."

Using 2.6.18-4 or 2.6.22-2, the intel_agp-module can be loaded without
detecting an 965G chipset.

Neither works for me, but there seems to be a different problem.
In both cases the last line printed is

input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /class/input/input0

that is, the freeze happens much earlier (before initializing SCSI or
IDE), and in this case I can reboot using ctrl-alt-del.

I forgot to point out that I use the amd64 arch, not i386. Maybe this
mismatch is the problem this time? (I used --force-architecture to be
able to install the above packages, and I guess that's a bad idea in
general.)

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
fyi, these are the patches used in the kernels above.
One is a backport of the patch suggested by Henrik. Upstream had had
some significant changes in the code between 2.6.18 and that fix, so
it did require some coding changes - reviews of this would be greatly
appreciated.

The other patch pulls back most of the localized changes to this
driver from latest upstream - the idea in testing that was to make
sure that the upstream fix was actually a code change in this driver.

Both work for me.

(In both cases the intel_agp-module is automatically loaded without
any noticable problems.)
